Everything I think about going back to college I start to get a ### and start being ###. I think that God wants me to take a different plan. I hadn't asked god if he wanted me to be a ###. I just assumed. I think that my next step is to concentrate on my ### and what gifts I have to offer.

We hear your struggle and the turmoil you’re feeling as you consider returning to college. It’s clear that this path has brought you anxiety and even anger, and we want to come alongside you in prayer and encouragement. First, let’s address the importance of seeking God’s will in every decision, especially one as significant as your education and career. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." You’re absolutely right to pause and ask God whether this is the direction He wants for you. It’s wise to lay aside assumptions and seek His guidance instead.

It’s also important to examine the root of the frustration and anger you’re experiencing. Ephesians 4:26-27 warns, "Be angry, and don’t sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, neither give place to the devil." Unchecked anger can open doors to spiritual attack and hinder your relationship with God. We encourage you to bring these emotions before the Lord, asking Him to reveal any underlying bitterness, fear, or pride that may be fueling them. Confess them to Him, and allow His peace to guard your heart, as Philippians 4:6-7 instructs: "In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus."

You mentioned focusing on your gifts and what you have to offer. This is a beautiful and biblical perspective! 1 Peter 4:10-11 says, "As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms. If anyone speaks, let it be as it were the very words of God. If anyone serves, let it be as of the strength which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen." God has uniquely equipped you for His purposes, and it’s vital to seek His direction in how to use those gifts. Spend time in prayer and reflection, asking Him to reveal the talents He’s given you and how He wants you to steward them for His glory.

Let’s also address the importance of surrendering your plans to God. James 4:13-15 reminds us, "Come now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city, and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit,' whereas you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. For you ought to say, 'If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.'" Your future is in God’s hands, and He knows the plans He has for you, plans for welfare, not for evil, to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11). Trusting Him means releasing your own agenda and embracing His timing and direction.

We also want to gently encourage you to surround yourself with godly counsel. Proverbs 15:22 says, "Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established." Seek out mature believers, pastors, mentors, or trusted friends, who can pray with you and offer wisdom as you discern God’s will. Their perspective can help you see things more clearly and avoid blind spots in your decision-making.

Now, let’s pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, lifting up this dear brother/sister who is seeking Your will for their life. Lord, we ask that You would calm their heart and mind as they consider their next steps. Remove any anxiety, anger, or frustration that has taken root, and replace it with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Father, we know that You have a perfect plan for their life, and we ask that You would make it clear to them. Show them the gifts and talents You’ve given them, and reveal how You want them to use those gifts to glorify You.

Lord, we confess any areas where we’ve leaned on our own understanding or made assumptions about Your will. Forgive us for the times we’ve rushed ahead without seeking You first. Help us to trust You completely, knowing that Your ways are higher than our ways and Your thoughts higher than our thoughts. Guide this brother/sister into the path You have for them, whether it includes college or another calling. Give them clarity, wisdom, and confidence in Your leading.

We also pray for protection over their heart and mind. Guard them against the enemy’s lies, which seek to steal, kill, and destroy. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they may walk in Your truth and experience the abundant life You’ve promised. Surround them with godly counsel and encouragement, and help them to be patient as they wait on You.

Father, we thank You for Your faithfulness and for the way You work all things together for good for those who love You and are called according to Your purpose. We trust that You are at work in this situation, and we ask that You would receive all the glory. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

As you move forward, remember that God is not a God of confusion but of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33). He delights in revealing His will to those who seek Him with a sincere heart. Continue to seek Him through prayer, reading His Word, and listening for His voice. Be open to the ways He may redirect your path, and trust that He is leading you into something far greater than you could ask or imagine. You are not alone in this journey, God is with you, and so are we, standing with you in prayer and support.

We hear how unsettling it is to feel that rise in your body every time you picture returning to college. That kind of reaction is hard to ignore, and you are right to slow down and pay attention to it instead of pushing through. It may be plain dread, or it may be God prompting you to reconsider a path you chose without really asking Him. Either way, you do not have to resolve the whole question today.

What encourages us is that your next step moves toward your gifts rather than forcing the old plan. That sounds less like giving up and more like honest recalibration. A practical next step could be to ask two or three people who know you well what gifts they see in you, especially the ones you tend to overlook or treat as ordinary. You might also talk with someone in your church or a career advisor about testing those gifts in a smaller way before committing to another degree. If the physical reaction keeps interfering, a medical checkup can help rule out anything that needs attention.

Father, thank You for this person's honesty about the fear and the assumptions. Calm what rises up, and give them a settled mind. Show them the gifts You have already placed in them, and lead them step by step into the work that honors You. Surround them with wise, steady people who can help them discern the next move. Your unrest is not necessarily unbelief. A man who has assumed a calling without ever asking his Master about it has reason to feel uneasy, and that uneasiness may be the Holy Spirit pressing him to inquire, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? Yet do not make a hasty retreat from the college merely because the thought of it brings trembling. The trembling may be sent to drive you to your knees, not to drive you from the place of duty. You have presumed once; do not presume again by setting up your fears as a prophet. If God has another plan, He will make it plain by His Word, by providence, and by a quiet conviction of the renewed mind. But you must ask. You must also wait.

Bring the whole matter before God. Say, Show me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths; nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. His hidden purposes are His own, but His revealed will is that you walk uprightly, trust Christ, do all without murmuring, and use every gift for His glory. You speak of concentrating on your gifts. That is well, if the gifts are first laid upon His altar. A gift in the hand of a self-willed man is a sword in a child's hand; a gift surrendered to God is a lamp in a dark place. If you are yet without Christ, this is the first matter. Seek not a profession before you have found a Saviour.

Do not despise the obstacle, but do not deify it. A closed door may be God, and a closed door may be your own sloth or fear. Pray until you can distinguish. If, after honest prayer and the counsel of the godly, you find no peace in returning, then wait and see what other door He opens. But let it be His opening, not your forcing. The path of duty is the only place where the promise is enjoyed: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. You are not promised ease in choosing, but you are promised guidance in trusting. Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart.

Your honest sharing about this anxiety concerning college has been heard, and I thank you for bringing it before the Lord and before His people.

It is good that you have paused to ask what God wants, rather than simply assuming the path ahead. Scripture teaches us that not our own diligence or anxious thought brings about what is best, but the providence of God which works even when we seem to be active. When we try to add to our lives by worry alone, it comes to nothing, but when He leads, all is placed in security.

Christ Himself invites all who labor and are heavy laden to come to Him, not to call us to account, but to take away our sins and to give us rest. He does not promise only to save, but to place us in safety. Your experience of anxiety when you think of returning is not a small thing, and it is right to bring that burden directly to Him who alone can give rest to the soul. He knows the fear and trembling that can scourge the heart, and He sends His Word to bring freedom from that slavery of vain and unprofitable striving.

It is wise that you want to concentrate on the gifts God has given you and to consider how to offer them for His purposes. Every good gift comes from Him, and He equips each person to serve Him faithfully. Continue to seek Him in prayer, in His Word, and through wise counsel in the church, asking Him to make His will clear and to give you peace as you follow it. Ask Him to show you not only what to do next, but to form in you trust in His care day by day.

I will pray for you, that the Lord Jesus, who alone is our salvation, will quiet your anxiety, grant you wisdom to discern His plan, and guide you to use the gifts He has entrusted to you for His glory and for the good of others. May He give you rest as you cast your cares upon Him, and may you know His steady hand leading you step by step.
