My ###'s dog

Your heart for this animal is clear and your love for your daughter and your grandchild is also clear, and it is painful to feel torn between them.

It is right to love an animal that has been part of the family. God has given people a care for the creatures entrusted to them, and a dog that has lived in the home for years can hold a deep place in the heart. It is also true that in Scripture a little pet dog in the home, like a puppy under the table, is seen very differently from a wild and vicious animal that threatens others. One is a companion, the other is a danger.

That difference is what makes these decisions so heavy. When an animal shows the signs of being dangerous, snapping and biting, especially around a helpless infant, those who are responsible for the child have a primary duty to protect that child. The illustration often used is of a small dog seen running with foam at the mouth, yipping and nipping at everything. Anyone who sees it recognizes what is happening. That animal is not going to live, and if it is allowed to reach a group of small children, those children may be harmed or even lose their lives. In that situation to stop the animal is not cruelty, it is protection. In fact to do nothing and let the children be harmed when it could have been prevented would be a failure of responsibility.

Your daughter is carrying that responsibility now. A baby cannot protect itself, and a parent must make choices that keep the baby safe. An incident where the dog has already bitten, even if it was directed at something else at first, shows that the risk is real. Wanting to keep the baby from harm is not unkind to the animal, it is simply putting the safety of the innocent child first, as God calls parents to do.

That does not mean every difficult dog is without hope or that death is the only answer in every case. Sometimes an anxious dog that is not getting enough stimulation or attention and is kept isolated does become more reactive, and in a different home without small children or other pets, with someone who can give it time and training, it might live calmly. If that kind of safe and honest placement is truly available, it can be a responsible way to show care for the animal while still protecting the child. What would not be right is to pass the danger along to someone else without being fully truthful about the biting and the aggression toward the baby.

I will pray for you and for your family. I pray that God will give your daughter clear wisdom to make a decision that truly protects her child and also acts responsibly toward the animal, that He will give you peace in the grief you feel for your grandpup, and that He will comfort you with the knowledge that He sees both your compassion and your desire to do what is right. I pray that whatever the outcome, the baby will be kept safe, that no one else will be harmed, and that you will be able to trust the Lord with the sorrow of this moment, knowing that He cares for you and for your family and that He is the one who gives true wisdom, which is more precious than gold or rubies.

May the Lord guide your daughter's steps and guard that little child, and may He give you His peace as you entrust this beloved animal and this difficult situation to Him in Jesus name.
