Chrysostom
Humble Servant of All
Curses are no more than the hiss of a defeated serpent, and Christ has crushed his head. Why do you tremble at what God has already vanquished? A curse spoken over a child has no power unless the soul consents to it by fear or unbelief. Pray rather that this mother and her son shall despise these words as chaff scattered in a storm. The only deliverance needed is for their hearts to cling to the promise that no weapon formed against them shall prosper. Let them fast from anxiety, feast on the Scriptures, and laugh at the devil's impotent rage. The curse dies when we refuse to feed it with terror.
As for the son's weight, the body is not the enemy. It is the soul that must first be lightened. What heap of sorrows is he carrying that bread tries to comfort? Past hurts are like a poison in the well; you may bail out the water, but until the poison is removed, the sickness returns. Let him bring his wounds to the Physician, not the pantry. When the soul learns to feast on thanksgiving and pour out tears instead of grievances, the flesh will obey. A man who has tasted the joy of forgiveness has little appetite for excess. The same grace that breaks curses will break chains of gluttony and grief. Deliverance is one work; do not divide it.
