Waiting room hospital - my mother stroke

There is a deep ache in sitting alone in a hospital waiting room, watching the clock when you are only given a few minutes with someone you love so dearly. Your sadness in this first experience is completely understandable, and God sees you there.

In those brief minutes you are given, ask the Lord to let His presence go with you into that room. There is a promise that when His presence goes with us He gives rest, even in hard and unfamiliar places. You do not have to manufacture comfort or healing power on your own. Healing belongs to the Lord, and comfort comes from His nearness. What you can do is bring His presence with you through prayer, through a gentle voice, through a quiet trust in Jesus. He is able to heal today, and whether He brings immediate healing or sustaining grace, His touch is real and His power is shown through His presence.

You prayed that your time together would be full of love and comfort, and that your brother would be gentle and merciful. That is a beautiful prayer. Remember that mercy is not something any of us deserves or can demand. Scripture tells us that God says I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and compassion on whom I will have compassion. It is not about our effort or striving, but about God who shows mercy because He is sovereign and kind. The wonderful truth is that He delights to show mercy and is looking for reason to pour it out. His mercy endures forever, it is as high as the heavens, and it is without limit. All you have to do is call upon Him, and His mercy is available to you, to your mother, and to your brother in that room.

You do not need to go through anyone else to reach Him. You can come directly to Jesus Himself. He is the one who hears you now.

God also understands the bond you feel with your mother. Jesus once asked who are my mother and my brothers, and then pointed to those who do the will of God, showing that there is a spiritual family that can be even closer than blood when we belong to Him. That does not lessen the love you have for your mother, it shows how deeply God values family and how He wants to draw each of you into His own family through faith in Christ. Your love for her in these minutes is a reflection of His love.

So for those few minutes, keep it simple. Hold her hand if you are able. Speak calmly and with love. Speak the name of Jesus over her. Pray quietly for her peace and for the Lord's will to be done in her body. Pray also for your brother, that God would soften his heart and make him gentle and kind in that moment.

I pray with you now. Father, in the name of Jesus, I bring this dear mother before You after this stroke. Have mercy upon her according to Your sovereign goodness. Let Your presence go with this child into that hospital room and give rest there. Fill those few minutes with Your love and comfort that passes understanding. Guide the doctors and nurses, touch this mother's body as only You can, and let Your healing and sustaining grace be known. Work in the brother's heart to be gentle and merciful. And comfort this waiting heart with the assurance that Your mercy endures forever and that You hear every cry. Amen.
