Silas
Beloved of All
Your willingness to bring this struggle into the light is a courageous and important step, and we are praying for you. God sees the battle you are facing and He is not distant from it. He desires to bring freedom and wholeness, and He has made a way for that through Jesus Christ.
Scripture helps us understand the nature of this battle. The apostle John writes that all that is in the world can be summed up as the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, and the pride of life. These are not from the Father but from the world, and the world with its desires is passing away. This is the same pattern we see from the beginning, when the temptation came with something that looked good to eat, beautiful to look at, and promised to make one wise and exalted. The same three avenues are still where temptation comes today. We also live in a time when there are countless opportunities to feed the desires of the flesh and the eyes. What is put before us on screens, on billboards, in entertainment and advertising can open floodgates that stir up lust and make purity much harder.
James adds that conflicts and struggles often come from desires warring within us. We want and do not have, and that inner craving drives us. He also warns that we can even pray with a wrong motive, asking only to spend what we receive on our own desires. Prayer is not a way to get our own will done on earth, but to align our hearts with the will of God. To love the world and its ways in this sense is to be unfaithful to God, like spiritual adultery, because friendship with the world is hostility toward Him.
God created our bodies and He created sexual desire, and He called it good within its proper place. That place is the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. Outside of that covenant, sexual intimacy is not an expression of love but an expression of lust. Scripture is very clear that sexual immorality has no place in the kingdom of God and we should not be deceived about that. Your body, if you belong to Christ, is a member of Christ Himself and a temple of the Holy Spirit. You have been bought with a price, the blood of Jesus, who redeemed you from being enslaved to the flesh so that you are now free to serve and worship Him. Because of this, the call is to flee sexual immorality, not to linger near it or try to manage it while staying close to it.
A related battle is in the mind. The Bible says a person is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desire and enticed, and when desire is allowed to conceive it gives birth to sin. Sin begins in the heart before it becomes an action. To look and to linger, to fantasize and to rehearse, is to feed that desire. That is why the wisdom of Proverbs says not to lust after beauty in your heart or to be captivated by seductive eyes. Maladaptive daydreaming, when it becomes a habit of living in fantasies, is part of this same struggle of the mind. Scripture speaks of once living according to the desires of the flesh and of the mind, doing what comes naturally to our fallen nature, and being by nature children under wrath. Fantasy can feel like an escape or a comfort, and there may be real reasons and wounds behind why it developed, but it can also become a way of indulging the desires of the mind and keeping the heart bound. What begins as imagination can strengthen the hold of lust and make real freedom harder.
The good news is that God does not leave us in that enslaved state. He can break chains that feel unbreakable. Many who have become entangled through pornography and fantasy describe becoming slaves to their desires, with those desires harming families and everything good, and feeling unable to be released. Yet Jesus came to set captives free.
If you desire freedom, consider these steps before the Lord. Bring this fully to Jesus in repentance and faith, trusting Him alone for salvation and for power to walk in purity. Ask Him not only to forgive but to cleanse and to make you new. Remove and cut off sources of temptation radically. If a way of seeing, a device, an app, a place, or a habit feeds lust, put it out of reach. Do not trust yourself to resist while still providing opportunity. Renew your mind daily with Scripture, memorizing and meditating on passages that speak of purity and of your identity in Christ. Take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and, when a fantasy begins, turn immediately to prayer, to truth, and to another activity rather than following it further. Seek accountable fellowship with mature believers who will walk with you honestly, encourage you, and pray for you regularly. And pray according to God's will, asking not to use His help to serve your desires, but to be made pure even as Christ is pure.
We are praying for you in this way.
Father, we lift this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ. You know the reasons and wounds behind this struggle, and You know the power of habit and desire. We ask for Your mercy and forgiveness through the blood of Jesus, and for the power of Your Holy Spirit to bring freedom from sexual addiction and from living in fantasy. Teach this heart to flee what is impure and to pursue what is holy. Guard the eyes and the heart, renew the mind, and make the body to be presented to You as an instrument of righteousness. Where there has been enslavement, bring release. Where there has been shame, bring cleansing. Where there has been emptiness from indulging desire, bring the fullness of knowing Christ and walking in Your will. Help this life to be rooted in Your Word, surrounded by faithful help, and strengthened day by day to walk in purity and in peace. Amen.
