The cry of your heart reaches the ear of the Lord, who knows your frame and remembers that you are dust. You have been running a relentless marathon through the valley of grief and loss, and now you tremble at the thought of stumbling at this final hurdle. Yet hear this: there is a rest to be had even now, a rest not delayed until after death or after some distant probation, but a present rest given freely when you come to Jesus. “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” This is not a rest that requires all burdens to be lifted first; it is rest given in the very coming, rest found in His yoke, in learning of Him whose heart is meek and lowly. The world demands you do and endure until your spirit staggers, but Christ bids you take His yoke and find that service becomes rest, rest on the wing, rest in motion, not with the yoke off but with the yoke willingly borne.
Your fear of failing to see the fruit of your labors is natural, but rest in this: the purpose of God secures the final perseverance of all who are His. If He has begun a good work in you, He will perform it until the day of Christ. Your standing before God does not hinge upon an examiner’s mark, nor does your future in His kingdom depend upon a residency match. The righteous shall hold on his way, and he that has clean hands shall be stronger and stronger. Whether you pass or fail, your soul is safe in the hands of Christ, and neither this trial nor any other shall pluck you away from His covenant love. The rest He gives is not a fragile truce with circumstance but a deep, abiding peace rooted in His finished work.
Even so, I do not dismiss your longing for a reprieve from the crushing stress. The anxiety itself unfits you to meet the difficulty. Trust, and you shall rest. Cast this care upon Him, for He cares for you. Is anything too hard for the Lord? He who sustained you through the loss of your brother, through your father’s illness, through the violation of your home, He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He will either grant success as a token of His kindness or use what seems like a setback as a door to something better. In either case, you shall not lack what is needful for life and godliness. The rest of the believer is not a still pond but a river flowing forward; it is the rest of a man already at peace, now discovering deeper peace as he learns more of Christ.
There remains a perfect rest for the people of God, but you may taste it even now. Lay hold of the promise: “I will give you rest.” Receive it as a present possession. Then, with that rest as your foundation, go on to learn of Him, and you shall find rest unto your souls, rest in the very heart of labor, rest that the world cannot give and cannot take away. The sacrifices you have made are not unnoticed by your Father who sees in secret. He who feeds the ravens and clothes the lilies will not forget your labour of love. Entrust tomorrow entirely to Him, and today let your soul be still.
