Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing this openly and for the heart you have shown in wanting to reach this man with the gospel. To share the good news of Jesus, to give food, to pray with someone who is in need, and to keep looking for him to encourage him, these are things the Lord honors. The fact that he prayed with you to receive Christ is precious, and only God knows the work His Spirit has truly done in a heart. We can plant and water, but God gives the increase.
Your concern for your wife and for your own safety is right and biblical. Scripture teaches that we have a first responsibility to care for and protect our own household, and that to neglect that care is a serious failure of love and faith. Getting rid of an item that could be used to track you, and refusing to let that possibility put your wife at risk, was a wise and caring step. Love does not require us to be careless with the safety of our family. Protecting your home is part of faithfulness.
It is painful when kindness may be met with deceit, but Scripture shows us this can happen. Jesus Himself was betrayed by one who walked closely with Him, who handed Him over for thirty pieces of silver. People have offered many ideas about why Judas did it, whether for money or to force Jesus to act, but the simple reality is that a betrayal took place even after great mercy had been shown. That does not mean every person will betray trust, but it reminds us to be discerning. The Lord calls us to be gentle and loving, and also to be wise and watchful. You can continue to love this man without giving him unchecked access to your private life.
There is also a lesson about how much our surroundings and associations can influence a household. When a family lingers long in an environment where God is not honored, that influence can pollute the home and bring costly trouble, even when there was an earlier desire to follow God. Tolerating what should not be tolerated, or allowing ungodly influences close without boundaries, can have lasting effects. This is why God calls us to establish His Word again at the center of our homes. Jesus said we are made clean through the word He has spoken, and the psalmist asked how a young man can keep his way pure, and answered, by taking heed to God's Word. Let the Word have its place in your home through prayer, reading, and honest conversation together. That will guard both of you far more than fear or suspicion ever could.
You do not need to live in fear, and you do not need to carry bitterness. You can release this to the Lord, thank Him for His protection, and ask Him for clear discernment going forward. If you feel led to continue to show kindness to this man, do so with careful boundaries. Do not meet alone, do not share personal details or your home address, and involve other mature believers if you have further contact. If you have any reason to believe you are being followed or threatened, it is also wise to let local authorities know, not out of revenge but out of care for your family and for others.
Pray for this man, that if his profession of faith was sincere the Lord would confirm it and lead him into truth, and that if there was deceit the Lord would convict him and draw him to real repentance. Pray too for your wife, that God would give you both peace and unity and keep your home under His hand. The Lord promised to be with His people as they walk in obedience, and He is able to keep you.
May the Lord give you wisdom, keep you and your wife in perfect peace as you trust in Him, and continue to use your compassion for others while guarding what He has entrusted to your care.
