Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You speak of trusting God for a wife, and this is good, yet I hear in your words a weariness that borders on despair. Take care that your longing does not become a snare. For marriage is honorable and pure, but it is not holiness itself; it merely guards the holiness that comes from faith, keeping you from fornication. If you treat it as the summit of your hope, you have already made an ill use of the gift before you receive it. The desire for a spouse is not wrong, but the feverish demand that God act soon, this reveals a heart not fully content with Christ alone.
Learn from the Apostle, who counted every power in heaven and earth as nothing compared to the love of Christ. Not angels, nor life, nor death could part him from that love. Now ask yourself: if God should delay this gift for many years, or even withhold it entirely, would your love for Him remain unshaken? The true preparation for marriage is to love the Bridegroom of your soul first, so that no earthly union can rival that affection. Then, whether married or single, you will be at peace, using whatever state you are in with moderation and self-restraint.
It is not marriage that hinders the kingdom, but a disordered purpose. So turn this season of waiting into a school of lowliness. Flee the unrighteousness of men who hold the truth in unrighteousness, that is, who know God’s will but twist it to serve their own passions. Let your singleness become a time for alms, for fasting, for chastity of mind, for lenience toward sinners. These are the virtues that adorn a soul, making it ready for whatever calling God ordains. Whether He leads you to marriage or to a higher continence, the same self-denial is required.
Remember that the heavenly Bridegroom came down to our lowly nature, not waiting for us to ascend. In the same way, if there is a woman prepared for you, she will come in God’s time, and not by your frantic searching. Trust His wisdom. Do not treat prayer as a means to pressure heaven; rather, pray that your will be conformed to His, and that your heart find its rest in Christ. Then, whether you receive a wife or not, you will have already obtained the greater blessing, the unbreakable love of Him who gave Himself for you. May we all attain to that treasure by the grace and love toward man of our Lord Jesus Christ, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, world without end. Amen.
