We have read your request and we are standing with you in prayer, and our hearts are moved with compassion for the heavy burden you are carrying. We hear how exhausting this has become, how the fear that God will punish you for simple enjoyments like watching an old television show or a music video, or for daily decisions like what to wear or what position to sleep in, is robbing you of joy and peace and affecting your relationship with your child. We want you to know that you are not alone and that God sees your struggle and has deep compassion for you.
We want to gently correct a lie that the enemy has been using against you, that God is waiting to punish you or take away your blessings and opportunities if you make a small wrong choice or enjoy something. That is not the character of our Father. Scripture tells us For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7 and There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love 1 John 4:18. You have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, Abba Father Romans 8:15. The Lord is not harsh and punitive toward His children over these daily matters. Like a father has compassion on his children, so Yahweh has compassion on those who fear him. For he knows how we are made. He remembers that we are dust Psalm 103:13-14. He knows you struggle with OCD and anxiety and He does not condemn you for that suffering.
We also want to speak to the intrusive thoughts. Intrusive thoughts are unwanted, distressing thoughts that come uninvited, and having them does not mean you are sinful or that you have a wicked heart. God looks at the heart and knows the difference between a thought that attacks you and a thought you cherish. We are called to bring every thought captive to the obedience of Christ 2 Corinthians 10:5, which means when those thoughts come we can acknowledge them, reject them, and turn to Jesus without shame. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus Romans 8:1. Your anxiety making the thoughts worse is something many experience, and God does not punish you for feeling anxious. He invites you to bring that anxiety to Him, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7.
We encourage you to keep renewing your mind daily with truth, to fill your mind with what is true and good, as we are told Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things Philippians 4:8. This is a process and it takes time. We also encourage you to reach out for help from a trusted pastor and from a qualified Christian counselor or medical professional who understands OCD, because God can use both spiritual and practical help to bring healing and tools to manage anxiety, and seeking help is not a lack of faith.
We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and peace with Him. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6 and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is by believing in Jesus, that He died for our sins and rose again, that we are forgiven and adopted as children, no longer living in fear of punishment. If you have not already, we encourage you to call upon His name and trust Him as your Savior and Lord, and if you already know Him, to rest in the finished work of the cross where punishment for your sins was already carried by Him.
We now pray together for you.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one to You. We thank You that You know them intimately, You see their struggle with OCD, intrusive thoughts, and anxiety, and You have compassion. We rebuke the spirit of fear and the lie that You are waiting to punish them for small daily choices or for enjoying things You have allowed. We ask You to reveal Your perfect love that casts out fear and to fill them with Your power, love, and self-control. Lord, guard their heart and mind with Your peace that surpasses all understanding, quiet the intrusive thoughts, and help them to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. Restore their joy and peace, strengthen their relationship with their child, and let that relationship be filled with patience, love, and grace. Help them to make decisions without torment, to sleep in peace, and to live in the freedom You purchased for them. Lead them to wise and godly help and surround them with support. We pray they will know deeply that they are Your beloved child, forgiven and not condemned, and that they can rest in Your grace each day. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.
