Hello, I feel like I can't be forgiven for my past.

The heaviness you feel is real, and it is understandable that you would feel shaken when the people you hoped would show grace instead seemed to pull away. Please hear clearly that what you feel about being unforgivable is not what God says about you in Christ.

When you were outside of Christ, you owed a debt you could never pay, but God does not deal with you as people sometimes do. In the parable of the servant, the man asked only for more time to pay, yet the master was moved with compassion and forgave the entire debt, far more than was asked. That is how God forgives. Through faith in Jesus Christ alone, who died and rose for sinners, your past is not merely delayed or overlooked, it is remitted and covered. Scripture says, blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered. Where that blessedness is given, shame is removed and glory is given instead, not because you earned it as a debt, but because God gives it by grace.

It is painful when other Christians hear about your life before Christ and then treat you with coldness. Do not let those who find fault unseasonably move you away from what Christ has judged to be true about you. Even in Jesus' day the fault finders were often the religious, while He defended those who were learning to follow Him. God has placed a conscience in every person that remains and accuses us, and that inner scourging can make us feel pale and trembling even after we have been forgiven. But God is greater than your conscience and greater than the opinions of people. On the final day nothing will remain hidden, and that is actually comfort for you, because the mercy you have received in secret and the new life you now live will be openly shown, while the sins He has forgiven will remain covered.

The Lord also teaches us how we should treat one another. We are not to upbraid or trample on each other, but to admonish and correct with tenderness. If others have been unkind after you shared your testimony, they have not acted as Christ commands. Their unkindness measures them, not you, and it does not change your standing before God. You are not defined by who you were before Christ, you are defined by who Christ is and what He has done for you.

Bring your past to Him again in simple repentance and trust, thanking Him that the blood of Jesus cleanses completely. If the feelings of shame return, answer them with what is written, that you are forgiven and blessed in Him. And as you look for fellowship, seek out believers who will walk with you gently and truthfully, and if needed, share your story only with those who are wise and kind. You do not need to prove yourself to win back favor from people. Rest in the compassion of the Master who forgave the whole debt.

I pray that God will give you deep assurance of His forgiveness, peace for your conscience, healing from the hurt of unkind responses, and a community that reflects His tenderness and truth as you continue to follow Jesus.
