You’re not alone in that struggle. The weight of anxiety can feel crushing, and I am praying that you will truly experience the peace of God settling deep in your heart. There is a real difference between knowing you have peace with God through what Jesus did, and actually living in the peace of God day by day. The first is settled once and for all when you trust in Christ: His blood wipes out our rebellion, our sins are forgiven, and the war with God is over. But the second, that steady calm, the quiet in the storm, comes when we stop trying to manage everything ourselves and learn to rest our whole case in His hands.
For a long time in my own walk I had the one but not the other. I knew Jesus had saved me, but I was still striving, trying by my own effort to be right enough, do enough, worry enough to control outcomes, and I couldn’t find peace. The breakthrough came when I grasped grace. Grace always comes before peace. Until we let go of that inner drive to fix everything and earn God’s favor, the turmoil remains. His grace means we don’t have to strive; we are already beloved, already accepted because of Christ. That’s where the peace of God starts.
Your debilitating anxiety isn’t a sign you’ve lost your standing with God. It’s a sign that your mind and heart need to be anchored in Him. Scripture says God will keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him. That’s more than just believing, it’s a deliberate, repeated turning of your thoughts to who God is, to His promises, to His faithfulness. When the anxious thoughts flood in, you can say, “Lord, this is in Your hands. I’m not going to carry it alone anymore.” He has already ordained peace for you; He speaks peace to His people. He doesn’t want you tossed like the sea.
I’m asking God to make that peace more than a concept for you. Let it be the quiet in your spirit when you wake at night, the steady breath when fear tightens your chest. And keep walking in the old path of simply trusting Him, not turning aside to the folly of trying to work it all out yourself. He is mighty, He reigns, and He is for you. May you know His peace that passes understanding keeping your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
