Debilitating anxiety

Disciple of Prayer
I fear I’ve lost my job from my crippling anxiety. I’m trying to cling to God but I feel as though he has abandoned me. Every day I’m consumed with worry, anxiety and fear, I have no peace. It’s why I don’t believe I’m truly saved because of how little peace and joy and other fruits I have of the Spirit. Please pray for me. Thank you

We hear the deep anguish in your heart, and we want you to know that you are not alone in this struggle. The weight of anxiety and fear can feel overwhelming, especially when it touches every part of your life, including your work and your walk with God. But we want to remind you that feeling distant from God does not mean He has abandoned you. The Bible tells us in Psalm 34:18, "Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit." Even in your darkest moments, He is near, and He sees your pain.

Your concern about not feeling the fruits of the Spirit is understandable, but salvation is not based on our feelings, it is based on faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast." If you have placed your trust in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you are saved, even when your emotions do not reflect it. The Holy Spirit is at work in you, even if you cannot see or feel it right now.

We also want to gently address the lie that anxiety means you are not saved or that God has turned away from you. Anxiety is a real struggle, but it does not define your standing with God. In fact, many great men and women of faith in the Bible battled fear and doubt, David, Elijah, and even the apostle Paul, who spoke of his "thorn in the flesh" (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). God does not condemn you for your struggles; He invites you to cast your cares upon Him because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister who is wrestling with debilitating anxiety and fear. Lord, we ask that You would draw near to them in this time of need. Remind them of Your promises, that You will never leave them nor forsake them (Hebrews 13:5). Father, we rebuke the spirit of fear in the name of Jesus, for You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). We ask that You would calm their heart and mind, replacing their anxiety with Your perfect peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:6-7).

Lord, we also pray for their situation at work. If it is Your will, restore what has been lost and provide for their needs. Give them wisdom and strength to trust You even when the future feels uncertain. Help them to fix their eyes on You, the author and perfecter of their faith (Hebrews 12:2). Father, we ask that You would fill them with the assurance of Your love and the hope of Your salvation. Let them know that their feelings do not dictate their faith, You do.

We also pray for healing, Lord. Whether this anxiety is rooted in physical, emotional, or spiritual battles, we ask that You would bring restoration. Surround them with godly community who can support and encourage them. Give them the courage to seek help if needed, whether through prayer, counseling, or medical support. You are the Great Physician, and we trust You to bring healing in every area of their life.

In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to hold fast to God’s Word, even when your emotions tell you otherwise. Meditate on Scriptures that speak of God’s faithfulness, such as Psalm 23, Isaiah 41:10, and Matthew 11:28-30. Surround yourself with believers who can pray for you and remind you of God’s truth. And remember, it is okay to seek help, whether through prayer, biblical counseling, or professional support. God can use all of these things to bring healing and restoration.

You are not abandoned. You are not forgotten. You are deeply loved by the One who gave His life for you. Keep pressing into Him, even when it feels hard. His grace is sufficient for you, and His power is made perfect in your weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

We hear you, and we’re sitting with you in this. That constant weight of worry, the dread that your job might be gone, the hollow ache of feeling abandoned, that’s a heavy place to be. It’s no wonder you’re struggling to find peace.

One thing we want to offer gently: the presence of overwhelming anxiety doesn’t mean you’re not saved. The fruit of the Spirit grows over a lifetime, like a tree, not like a light switch. Many faithful believers have walked through seasons where peace and joy felt entirely out of reach, and it wasn’t proof of lost salvation, it was proof of a hard struggle. The very fact that you’re still clinging to God, even when it feels like He’s far away, shows faith. A clenched grip in the dark is still faith.

Because this anxiety has become crippling, we think a wise, practical step might be to reach out for some help alongside prayer. A Christian counselor or therapist can help you untangle the physical and mental patterns that have you locked in fear. This is not a lack of faith; it’s good stewardship of your mind and body. Your doctor might also be a starting point to rule out anything physical that’s amplifying your stress.

In the middle of it all, remember that Jesus’ love for you isn’t based on how you feel today. He’s not waiting for you to produce enough peace to prove yourself. He’s already holding you, even when you can’t sense it.

Let’s pray: Lord Jesus, we come with our friend right now. You know the inside of this fear, the racing thoughts, the sense of being cut off, the heavy dread. Please quiet the noise inside. Bring a small, steady sense of Your presence, even in the middle of the storm. Give wisdom about work, and if it’s needed, open the door toward the right help. Remind our friend that You will never let go. Amen.

The very anxiety that consumes you, the deep unease because you find no peace, is not the proof of an unsaved state, it may well be the stirring of grace within. “He has no hope who never had a fear; and he that never doubted of his state, he may perhaps, perhaps he may, too late.” The soul dead in trespasses slumbers on without such distress, but you are awake enough to tremble. “If you are in doubt about your salvation, and yet are content, I fear that you know nothing at all about the matter, for the true child of God, if he is in any doubt, is uneasy till that doubt is gone.” Your misery itself is a kind of earnest cry; you cannot rest without Christ, and that is a blessed sign.

Yet you put the cart before the horse. Peace and joy are the fruit of faith, not the root. You say, “I have no peace, therefore I am not saved.” But the Gospel turns it the other way: you are saved by faith in Christ, and peace flows from that union. The Scripture declares, “Whoever believes on Him shall not be ashamed.” Not whoever feels calm, but whoever trusts. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, often in a still, small voice, not in overpowering emotions. “Peace, perfect peace! In this dark world of sin? The blood of Jesus whispers peace within.” You may not yet feel the full breeze of the Spirit, but the whisper of the blood is there for all who simply look.

You say God has abandoned you, but He bids you, “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth.” He commands you to look, not to feel. Noah “was moved with fear” when warned of judgment, and that holy fear did not send him fleeing from God, it drove him to obedience and into the ark of safety. May it be so with you: “Moved with fear, may you be drawn and driven to the Lord Jesus!” Not a servile terror that shuns the Judge, but a trembling that casts itself entirely upon the Mediator.

Salvation is not a reward for those who manufacture peace; it is God’s free gift to sinners who believe. It is His salvation, planned by Him, purchased by Him, applied by Him. “Here is salvation for the blackest of sinners, salvation so full of grace that only God could have conceived it.” Depend upon Christ without fear as to your present and eternal safety. Leave the whole matter with Him in unquestioning confidence, though your heart trembles. Then, even with sorrows surging round, you shall taste what “perfect peace” means. In Jesus’ keeping you are safe, your daily cares included.

I will pray fervently that the Comforter will settle your heart upon this one thing, the finished work of the Lord Jesus. Look to Him now, not to your feelings. Keep your eyes up all this year long, and the ditch of despair will be avoided. “Stand still, and see the salvation of God.” It is enough! His honor is engaged to save the meanest of His sheep.
