Debilitating anxiety

You ask to experience the peace of God. This peace is not something that depends on outward circumstances, nor is it the fragile peace that comes from human agreements. Christ said, "My peace I give to you," and this is a peace of an entirely different kind, one that unites you to Him and makes you strong within, even when the world around you is in turmoil. The peace that comes from men quickly dissolves, but the peace that rests on God remains fixed forever.

When anxious thoughts rise up and fight within you, one urging you to despair, another to trust, let the peace of God act as umpire in your heart. Do not let contentiousness or fear hold the prize. This peace persuades you that God is the God of reconciliation, who made peace with you through His own Son while you were still His enemy. What mind could have expected such a thing? Yet that very love now guards the hearts and thoughts of those who are in Christ Jesus.

Therefore, in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. Do not simply ask for future mercies without gratitude for what He has already given. Give thanks even for the things that seem bitter, for He disposes all things for your profit, even when you do not perceive it. A grateful soul, steady in prayer, is a sacrifice pleasing to Him.

The peace of God is the mother of all good, the foundation of joy. Seek it not only in the church when the blessing is pronounced, but receive it eagerly in your inmost heart before you even approach the holy things. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. Let your forbearance be known to everyone. The Lord is near; be anxious for nothing. His peace, which surpasses all understanding, will garrison your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus.

You’re not alone in that struggle. The weight of anxiety can feel crushing, and I am praying that you will truly experience the peace of God settling deep in your heart. There is a real difference between knowing you have peace with God through what Jesus did, and actually living in the peace of God day by day. The first is settled once and for all when you trust in Christ: His blood wipes out our rebellion, our sins are forgiven, and the war with God is over. But the second, that steady calm, the quiet in the storm, comes when we stop trying to manage everything ourselves and learn to rest our whole case in His hands.

For a long time in my own walk I had the one but not the other. I knew Jesus had saved me, but I was still striving, trying by my own effort to be right enough, do enough, worry enough to control outcomes, and I couldn’t find peace. The breakthrough came when I grasped grace. Grace always comes before peace. Until we let go of that inner drive to fix everything and earn God’s favor, the turmoil remains. His grace means we don’t have to strive; we are already beloved, already accepted because of Christ. That’s where the peace of God starts.

Your debilitating anxiety isn’t a sign you’ve lost your standing with God. It’s a sign that your mind and heart need to be anchored in Him. Scripture says God will keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him. That’s more than just believing, it’s a deliberate, repeated turning of your thoughts to who God is, to His promises, to His faithfulness. When the anxious thoughts flood in, you can say, “Lord, this is in Your hands. I’m not going to carry it alone anymore.” He has already ordained peace for you; He speaks peace to His people. He doesn’t want you tossed like the sea.

I’m asking God to make that peace more than a concept for you. Let it be the quiet in your spirit when you wake at night, the steady breath when fear tightens your chest. And keep walking in the old path of simply trusting Him, not turning aside to the folly of trying to work it all out yourself. He is mighty, He reigns, and He is for you. May you know His peace that passes understanding keeping your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

We want to thank you for the trust you placed in us to stand with you in prayer during this difficult time of debilitating anxiety. It has been our privilege to lift you before the Lord, asking Him to wrap you in His peace that surpasses all understanding. We have prayed fervently that you would feel His presence calming your heart and mind, replacing fear with the assurance of His love and sovereignty.

If the Lord has answered this prayer and you are experiencing even a measure of His peace, we would be so encouraged to hear your praise report. Your testimony could be a blessing to others who are struggling in similar ways. On the other hand, if the anxiety still feels overwhelming and the peace of God seems distant, please do not hesitate to post this request again. We are here to continue standing with you, interceding on your behalf until you feel the weight lift and His comfort surround you.

Remember, the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). He knows the depths of your struggle, and He is faithful to meet you there. Keep seeking Him, leaning into His Word, and resting in the promise that He will never leave you nor forsake you.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13). We continue to pray for you in Jesus' Name.
