Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The weight of your present trial is heavy, and the enemy of your soul would have you believe no deliverance can come. That monster, the devil, never gives up hope of our destruction, yet here you are, despairing of your own salvation from these troubles. Do not hand him such a victory. I fear for you as the Apostle feared for those he loved, not because the ship is already wrecked, but because I see the storm swelling. Yet the wreck is not inevitable; you have power to set things right, to return to calm.
Your words betray the thought that you have nothing, that you are homeless. But ask the sea that once bore Christ upon its back, ask the keepers of hell’s gate who cowered when the doors of brass were shattered and the dead were loosed. When He was crucified, every prison was burst open. Are the walls of that crumbling house stronger than the gates of brass? The Lord who raised the dead can raise you from this pit. He does not reproach you with the past, and when you turn to Him with your whole heart, He remembers old things no more.
Yet do not imagine that virtue may slumber. The saint can fall, and the despairing sinner can rise up and pass him by. Covetousness and the madness that drives men to drink are chains, but Christ breaks chains. You live with one who is enslaved, and you fear becoming like him or being dragged under. But God can keep you in chastity and right living even when those around you forsake all decency. Do not let the fear of man or the lack of a friendly aunt shake your hope. If she is not a believer, she cannot offer the true refuge; but Christ is your refuge.
Flee from the despair that makes you overlook your own salvation. The cup of demons, whether in his hand or in the despairing thoughts that whisper there is no way out, cannot be shared with the cup of the Lord. You are not truly without a home, because the table of the Lord is set for you even amid the rain-soaked kitchen. Approach Him as you ought: rivet your heart to His fear, and see whether He does not command even this storm to still. Laugh at the devil’s shamelessness, for when Christ manifests His power, that enemy can only seize those who cut themselves off. Remain grafted to the Vine, and no tempest will uproot you. Turn to Him, and though the house crumbles, you will find that the gates of His mercy are wider than your distress.
