Your prayer echoes the heart of Paul in Ephesians 1:17 to 21 and it is a prayer God delights to answer. You are asking for exactly what He wants to give, a deeper and more personal knowing of Himself through the Holy Spirit.
The word translated revelation means an unveiling, a lifting of the covering to let something be seen clearly. Scripture is not a sealed book that hides Christ but an unveiling that shows Him. What God gave to John and what Paul prayed for the Ephesians is the same desire, that Jesus Christ would be revealed to our hearts and that we would see Him as He is.
That is why Paul prays for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation and for the eyes of the heart to be flooded with light. He wants believers to know three things with certainty. First, the hope of His calling, the confident future we have because He has called us to Himself and to eternal life with Him. Second, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, the great value He places on His people whom He has redeemed by the blood of the Lamb. Third, the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.
That power is not abstract. It is the same mighty power God exerted when He raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, not only in this age but also in the age to come. The resurrection proves that Jesus is alive and supreme, and the same power that raised Him is at work in those who trust Him.
So we join you in this prayer, that the Father would give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation to know Him better, that your heart would be enlightened to grasp the hope you have in Christ, the richness of belonging to Him, and the greatness of the power that is already yours through faith. May the Lord make Christ more clear and more precious to you, and may you walk in the confidence that He who was slain is worthy to receive all power and glory and honor, and that He reigns above every other power, now and forever. In Jesus name, amen.
