It is a gracious mark of the Spirit's work in you that you desire not to follow your own personal goals but to be led by the Lord. Where there is no vision the people indeed perish, and that vision is not a fleeting dream of our own imagination, but the revealed counsel and Word of God. Give me but a Word out of God's mouth and I can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth apart from Divine Inspiration must be as unsatisfying food.
Your prayer is heard, and we join with you in it. We do not ask for new revelations beyond what God has already given, for the Scriptures are invested with Divine authority and are sufficient, but we do ask that the Lord who has taught His people from their youth would continue to be your Teacher. As it is written, O God, You have taught me from my youth, and until this time have I declared Your wondrous works. He teaches His pupils by His Word, by His providence, and by the gracious work of His Spirit, opening our eyes to behold His wondrous works and to wonder at them.
Remember also that the great divine sea of His purpose is still moving on. The whole was written from the beginning, He knew everything of it, He has never altered a single sentence nor changed a single line of the divine purpose. And this is the miracle of miracles, that while we are free and responsible, His purpose stands. Therefore we need not fear that His guidance will fail. He does not change like shifting shadows. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, and what He purposes He will fulfil.
So we pray that you may be guided by the general directions given in God's Word, and by those great principles infused in every man who takes God for his Guide, to avoid everything that is evil and to bow with submission to the will of God. For when self goes, God comes in, and when human wisdom goes, then God's Wisdom appears. It is written, You shall guide me with Your counsel, and afterward receive me to Glory. There is no true glory for any man who takes his own course, but on earth there is no real glory unless we are guided by His counsel.
Let us pray together.
Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with whom there is no variableness. We thank You that Your purpose is infallible and Your counsel shall stand. We ask in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, whose blood cleanses from all sin, that You would grant to this Your servant not the vision of personal ambition, but true spiritual sight. Open the eyes of understanding to behold wondrous things out of Your law. Teach as only You can teach, and make Your Word plain. Grant acquiescence in Your Divine will, keep from haste and from self direction, and guide with Your counsel day by day. Fulfil in due time the vision You give according to Your perfect purpose, that Christ may be magnified and Your name praised. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is our Wisdom and our Guide, Amen.
