Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We thank God for your hunger to follow His leading rather than your own personal goals and we join with you in seeking His will together in Jesus name. We love your heart to desire what God desires for you and to want vision that comes from Him.

We want to gently encourage you in the true meaning of the verse you shared. In its full context Proverbs 29:18 says Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. The vision spoken of there is not primarily personal ambition or even a mystical picture, but the revealed word and counsel of God. When we do not have His revelation we drift, but when we keep His law and walk in His truth we are blessed. Your desire is therefore very biblical, to want Gods revelation to guide you so you do not cast off restraint and follow your own way.

We also rejoice that you thanked the Father for His unchanging nature and quoted that beautiful truth that Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow, James 1:17. That is the character of our God, He does not change like shifting shadows and He is faithful to fulfill what He speaks. We also remember His promise in Acts 2:17, It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. God still speaks and still gives vision by His Spirit, and we do pray for you to receive what He wants to show you.

At the same time we want to encourage you to seek vision first and foremost through His written Word, because His Word is the sure foundation to test every vision, dream, or impression. Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path, Psalm 119:105. Any vision from God will never contradict Scripture and will always draw you closer to Christ and to holiness. For that reason we are told Beloved, don't believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, 1 John 4:1. As you pray for visions, we encourage you to remain rooted in Scripture, in prayer, and in fellowship with other believers who can help you weigh what you receive.

We also hear your desire not to just follow your own personal goals. That is a surrendered heart that God honors. We are called Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God, Romans 12:2, and to Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight, Proverbs 3:5-6. God has good thoughts toward you, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future, Jeremiah 29:11, and He delights to make His will known to those who seek Him diligently.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or turning shadow, and that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand. We thank You for this one who desires Your vision above personal ambition. We ask in Jesus name that You pour out Your Spirit and grant clear, holy vision that is from You. Open the eyes of understanding, speak through Your Word, through Your Spirit, through dreams and visions as You will, and help this dear one to discern what is truly from You. Make Your will plain, keep this life anchored in Your Word so that no false vision or selfish goal can lead astray, and fulfill the vision You give for Your glory. Teach us to walk not by our own understanding but to acknowledge You in all our ways, and to prove Your good and perfect will. We ask that You give courage to obey what You show, even when it requires laying down personal plans, and that You bring peace and confirmation through Your Word. We thank You that You do not change and that You are faithful to complete what You begin. We pray all of this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who alone gives us access to Your throne, amen.

We hear how much you want to be led by God and not just your own plans. That desire to follow Him rather than push ahead on your own is a humble and good place to be.

We have found that God's direction often comes less like a sudden flash and more like steady training over time. Small, faithful habits of meeting with Him shape our ability to recognize His voice and to tell the difference between our own ideas and His leading. It is a long road of becoming, and He is patient to form us along the way.

One simple practice that may help is to keep a regular, unhurried time with the Lord in Scripture and prayer, and to jot down what you sense He is putting on your heart. Then bring those notes to a trusted pastor or mature believer who knows you, so you can weigh them together and seek wisdom in community. That kind of steady testing helps keep us grounded and humble as we listen.

Father, we lift our friend to You. Draw near and make Your ways clear in Your perfect timing. Give wisdom to discern Your leading, courage to follow where You guide, and peace to rest in Your faithful care. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

Your longing not to follow your own personal goals but to be led by the Lord is itself an evidence that His grace is at work in you, for it is the work of the Spirit which is the effect of the will of God to change the human will and so make men willing in the day of God's power.

You quote well that where there is no vision the people perish, and that vision is not a fleeting dream of our own imagination but the revealed will of God. There is a Divine will which governs all things, as surely as God's will is the axle of the universe and the great heart of providence sending its pulsings through even the most distant limbs of human act. While many of God's purposes are hidden from us, there is a revealed will which we must not violate, and there is a Providential will which we should always consult, with guidance which comes from the circumstances that surround us and above all from His Word. Nine times out of ten, look to the Ten Commandments and you will at least know what you must not do, and knowing what you must not do you will be able to conclude what you may do.

It is foolish for a man to feel that he can do as he likes and that everything will fall out as he desires, saying we will go, we will buy, we will sell, we will get gain, and not to ask God's consent at all. When you say I will do this or that, always add in thought if not in words, If the Lord wills. No harm can come to you if you bow to God's sovereign sway. The true child of God learns that Divine art of absolute resignation till he is able to say, Father, I will, and yet also, Father, not as I will. You can always have your way when your way is God's way.

Let us pray together for you.

Our Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change like shifting shadows, with whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning, and that every good gift and every perfect gift cometh down from the Father of lights. We ask in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus that You would guide this Your servant with Your counsel and afterward receive him to glory. Grant not merely the desires of a personal plan, but give sight, give light, give that true vision which is Your own revealed truth, that he may yield to Your superior judgment and lay aside his own logic and say, Lord, You shall guide me. Work in him to will and to do of Your good pleasure, dethrone obstinacy and give acquiescence in the Divine will, so that whether he goes or stays it may be if it is the will of God. Keep him near Yourself, for if he lives near You, You will say things to him that You will not tell others, and make Your Word a lamp to his feet. We ask this not because he is worthy, but because Your Son has borne Divine vengeance for sin and opened the way to Your mercy. Fulfil the visions You give according to Your unchanging faithfulness. Your longing not to follow only your own personal goals but to walk in God's will is good and pleasing to Him, and I join you in prayer for that.

You mentioned Proverbs 29:18, where there is no vision the people perish. That word vision does not mean personal ambitions or inner pictures for our future, but God's prophetic revelation, His Word and counsel. When that revelation is neglected, people cast off restraint. The healthy vision we need is not a distorted or imaginary phantom, but a clear eye of understanding that sees what God has already revealed. As Scripture teaches, God has blessed us and chosen us in Christ according to His eternal purpose purposed in Christ Jesus, not as a new or changing plan, but as what He foreordained from the beginning. To know His will, therefore, we look first to what He has already spoken in Scripture, which is the sure and sufficient guide.

This is also why the visions given in Scripture, such as the sheet shown to Peter or the sound of wind and tongues of fire at Pentecost, were given for a specific purpose at that time to point to Christ and to confirm that the Gentiles also had received the Word of God. They were signs to confirm the truth for those present, but for those who believe, faith in the Word that has already been manifested suffices, and the Holy Spirit comes to dwell with us without need of a sensible vision. God has not left us to chase new revelations, but to have our minds made sane and our vision healthy through His Word, so we are not confused by our own thoughts.

So my prayer for you is not that you would chase experiences, but that God would give you illumination to understand and obey what He has already revealed, and keep you from pursuing empty goals.

Let us pray. Heavenly Father, Father of lights with whom there is no variableness nor shadow of turning, from whom every good and perfect gift comes down, we thank You that You do not change and that Your purpose in Christ stands firm. Grant to this one a healthy and clear spiritual sight, cleansed from confusion and self seeking, to receive Your Word with faith and to walk in it. Give wisdom to discern Your will in Scripture, courage to obey it, and contentment to trust that Your Spirit dwells with those who are in Christ. Lead away from mere personal ambition and establish every step according to Your eternal counsel. Fulfill in this life what is according to Your good will, for Your glory. In the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our only Savior and Lord, amen.
