Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We join with you in this desire to seek God's vision rather than simply following personal goals, and we thank God with you that He does not change like shifting shadows and that He is faithful to fulfill what He purposes.

We love your heart to not lean on your own understanding, for it is good and right to want what God wants. You quoted Proverbs 29:18, and we want to gently share its fuller meaning to encourage you. In the World English Bible it says, Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Proverbs 29:18. The vision spoken of there is not primarily a personal dream or picture, but the revealed Word and counsel of God. When God's Word is not known or heeded, people wander without restraint. So the greatest vision we can receive is the revelation of God's Word and His will made clear to us through Scripture, confirmed by His Spirit.

We do rejoice that God still speaks and that He does give visions and dreams according to His will, as it is written, It will happen afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions. Joel 2:28 and again in Acts 2:17. Yet Scripture also warns us to test what we see and hear, for not every vision is from God. Thus says Yahweh of Armies, Don’t listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you. They teach you vanity. They speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of Yahweh. Jeremiah 23:16 and Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God. 1 John 4:1. Therefore we pray not only for visions, but for discernment to know what is truly from the Lord, and for a love for His Word above any experience.

Your prayer quoting James 1:17 is beautiful and true, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17. If God gives you a vision, it will be a good gift that aligns with His character and His Word, and He will bring it to pass in His timing.

We also hear your desire to not just follow your own personal goals. God calls us to surrender our plans to Him. Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 and Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2. Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105. The safest way to know God's vision for your life is to abide in His Word daily, to pray, and to walk in obedience to what He has already revealed.

So we pray together with you now.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning, and that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand. We thank You for this child of Yours who desires Your vision over personal ambition. Lord, we ask in Jesus' name that You would pour out Your Spirit and make Your will known clearly. Give revelation through Your Word, open the eyes of understanding, and if it pleases You, grant dreams and visions that are truly from You and that draw this life closer to Christ. Grant wisdom and discernment to test every spirit and to hold fast to what is good and true according to Scripture. Help us all to not cast off restraint but to keep Your law and walk in Your blessing. Turn our hearts from selfish goals and conform us to Your good, well-pleasing and perfect will. Lead by Your lamp and light, and fulfill the vision You give for Your glory. We ask this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our only access to Your throne, amen.

Thank you for letting us pray with you about this. We love that your first concern is not just achieving personal goals but wanting to walk in step with what God has for you.

We have found it helps to think of vision less as a sudden picture and more as a growing sense of God's calling that shapes our daily choices. It gives direction and a hunger for what matters to Him, rather than just chasing our own ideas. That kind of vision usually grows as we stay close to Him, listen, and let Him shape our desires over time.

One simple practice that has helped many is to set aside a few quiet minutes each day to ask the Lord to show you His purposes, then note what seems to stay on your heart and bring it to Scripture and to a trusted mature believer to weigh together. It keeps us from leaning only on our own impressions and helps us recognize His leading more clearly.

Father, thank You for this heart that wants to follow You. Give clarity and peace as You lead step by step, and help Your purposes become more dear than personal plans. Guide with wisdom and keep them close to You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your longing not to follow merely your own personal goals but to be led by the Lord is itself a good desire, and it is right to bring it before Him in prayer.

The vision spoken of in Proverbs 29:18 is not a private dream or an inward impression, but the revealed Word of God, His counsel made known to His people. Where that revelation is neglected, the people cast off restraint and perish, but where it is heard and obeyed, there is life and keeping. Give me but a Word out of God's mouth, and I can live upon it, but the words out of man's mouth, apart from Divine Inspiration, must be as unsatisfying food as if men tried to live on stones.

Therefore our prayer for you is not that you should chase after new revelations, for God has already given us His infallible purpose which is never altered. The whole was written there from the beginning, He knew everything of it, He has never altered a single sentence nor changed a single line of the divine purpose. The great divine sea of His purpose is still moving on, and while the creature is free, yet the joy remains that the divine purpose stands. What you need, and what we ask the Father of lights to grant you, is eyes to see and a heart to submit to what He has already revealed.

Scripture teaches us how such guidance comes. First, be guided by the general directions given in God's Word. There are great principles infused in every man who takes God for his Guide, among them to avoid everything that is evil and to bow with submission to the will of God. The Grace of God dethrones obstinacy and gives us in its place acquiescence in the Divine will, and by that very fact we are furnished with unerring guidance. Haste is the author of a great deal of mischief in human life, but to be taught of God from our youth, as David was, and to declare His wondrous works with pen and voice, is the path of wisdom.

So let us pray together.

Heavenly Father, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, from whom cometh down every good gift and every perfect gift, we thank You that You do not change like shifting shadows and that You fulfil all Your holy purpose. We ask in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, who is the Propitiation for our sins and in whom alone is salvation, that You would teach this Your servant to be Your pupil. Open the eyes of understanding to behold wondrous things out of Your law. Grant not a fleeting vision of human imagination, but a clear sight of Christ crucified and risen, and of Your revealed will in Scripture. Dethrone self will and personal ambition, and work in this heart that blessed submission which bows to Your counsel. Guide with Your counsel here on earth, and afterward receive to glory, for on earth there is no real glory unless we are guided by Your counsel. Cause this life to be spent not in pursuing personal goals, but in declaring Your wondrous works to others, that You alone may be glorified. We ask this trusting not in our worthiness, but in the blood of Jesus Christ Your dear Son which cleanses from all sin. Amen.
