Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We join you in this desire to seek God's vision rather than simply pursuing personal goals, and we thank God that you have asked in the name of Jesus Christ, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father.

We love your heart to not lean on your own understanding but to be led by the Lord. The scripture you quoted is so true, as it is written Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Without God's revelation and direction we do indeed wander, but when we seek His counsel and obey His Word we find life and blessing. We also rejoice with you in the truth you quoted that James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. He does not change, and every vision and purpose that truly comes from Him will be good, perfect, and fulfilled in His timing.

We want to encourage you that God does still speak and lead His people, and He desires to give you wisdom and direction. It is written Acts 2:17 It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. Yet we also gently remind you that every vision, dream, or leading must be tested against the written Word of God, for God will never contradict Scripture. We are told 1 John 4:1 Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God and 1 Thessalonians 5:21 Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good. The primary way God gives us vision today is through His Word and by His Holy Spirit illuminating it to our hearts. Personal goals are not wrong when they are surrendered to Him, but we must allow Him to shape and even replace them with His higher purposes.

We also take comfort in Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. And we are called to Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

So together we pray for you now.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning, and that You are faithful to fulfill every true vision You give. In the mighty name of Jesus we ask that You pour out Your Spirit upon our dear fellow believer and grant clear, biblical vision and revelation for the path ahead. Remove confusion and selfish ambition, and replace it with a heart that seeks Your will alone. Give discernment to test every impression against Your Word, give courage to obey what You reveal, and give patience to wait on Your timing. Lead this life not by personal goals alone but by Your perfect and eternal purposes, that all that is done would bring glory to You. We ask that You make Your paths straight and guide each step according to Your Word. In Jesus' mighty and powerful name we pray, amen.

We appreciate the heart behind your request. Wanting God's vision instead of just chasing your own goals shows you really want to follow Him, not just ask Him to bless your plans. We hear that and we are praying with you.

One thing we have learned is that God's guidance is often quieter than we expect. Sometimes we hope for a dramatic picture, and God does speak that way when He chooses, but more often He leads us as we walk closely with Him day by day, through His Word, through prayer, and through the wisdom of other faithful believers who know us. Learning to tell the difference between our own strong desires and His leading takes time, humility and testing, which is why community matters so much.

A simple next step that may help is to set aside a few minutes each day to be still before the Lord, write down what you sense He may be showing you, and then share those notes with a trusted pastor or mature Christian friend who can help you weigh them prayerfully.

Father, we lift our friend to You. Give them a clear sense of Your will and the humility to follow where You lead. Guard them from confusion and draw them closer to Jesus each day as they seek You. Lead them step by step in Your perfect way. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your desire to walk according to the Lord's direction rather than merely following your own personal goals is itself a good gift from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, and we thank God to see it in you.

You quote Proverbs 29:18, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." That precious text is often misunderstood in our day. The vision there is not a private picture or plan for personal ambition, but the prophetic revelation of God's own Word. Where there is no faithful preaching and revealing of the mind of God, the people cast off restraint. Give me but a Word out of God's mouth, and I can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth, apart from Divine Inspiration, must be as unsatisfying food. What you need, and what we all need, is not a new revelation, for the canon of Scripture is complete and sufficient, but illuminated eyes to behold the wondrous works which God has already revealed.

Scripture teaches us how such guidance comes. First, be guided by the general directions given in God's Word. There are great principles infused in every man who takes God for his Guide, among them to avoid everything that is evil and to bow with submission to the will of God. By that very fact we are furnished with unerring guidance. The Psalmist says, "Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory." On earth there is no real glory for us unless we are guided by God's counsel. David could say, "O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works." He was God's pupil, taught by many struggles and chastenings, made to observe God's work in himself and in others until he wondered at it.

Remember also that God's purpose is infallible. You and I are only waves of His great sea, but the great divine sea of His purpose is still moving on. The whole was written there from the beginning, He knew everything of it, He has never altered a single sentence nor changed a single line of the divine purpose. It is the miracle of miracles that the creatures are free, absolutely free, and yet the divine purpose stands. You need not fear that if you submit yourself to His Word you will miss His will. He fulfils the visions He gives, and His Word shall not return void.

So we will pray for you not that God would give you visions beyond Scripture, but that He would give you sight within Scripture.

Heavenly Father, we thank Thee that Thou dost not change like shifting shadows and that every good and perfect gift cometh down from Thee. We ask in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who alone is the propitiation for our sins and through whose blood we are cleansed and made Thy people, that Thou wouldst teach our brother as Thou hast taught Thy pupils from their youth. Open his eyes to behold wondrous things out of Thy law. Grant him acquiescence in Thy Divine will, dethroning obstinacy and haste, and guide him with Thy counsel day by day. Make him to love Thy Word, to delight in it, and to declare Thy wondrous works with pen and voice as Thou givest opportunity. Keep him from following his own understanding, and establish his steps according to Thy infallible purpose, until Thou shalt afterward receive him to glory. In Jesus' name we ask it, Amen.

Your desire to follow God's direction rather than only your own personal goals is good and right, and we are glad to pray with you about it.

You mention Proverbs 29:18, where it is written where there is no vision the people perish. That verse is often misunderstood. The word translated vision there does not mean personal mystical experiences or new private revelations. It means the revealed word and counsel of God, His prophetic instruction. Where that is neglected, people cast off restraint and wander. The need therefore is not to chase a new vision, but to hear and obey what God has already spoken.

Scripture shows that God did at times give visions, but He did so for particular reasons and not as the ordinary way He guides all believers. To some who were full of faith He gave no open vision because it was not needed, while to others who were more dull or who needed a clear confirmation He granted a sign so that they would be certain it was from Him. Even the apostles received visible signs like the sound of wind and tongues of fire not for their own sake but for those who were present and needed to be convinced. For those who believe, faith and the sure testimony of Scripture are sufficient, for signs are not for those who believe but for those who do not yet believe.

This helps us understand how God leads His people now. He has not left us without vision. He has given us His complete word, His Spirit, and the life and teaching of Christ. Paul was taught directly by revelation at his conversion because his change was so sudden and his former life so opposed to the gospel that only a divine intervention could turn him, and that revelation was then confirmed by his life and by the witness of others. For us today, God normally makes His will known as we abide in Scripture, pray, walk in obedience, and seek wise counsel, rather than by waiting for an extraordinary sight.

So we will not pray that you would simply receive visions on demand, but that God would give you a clear sight of Christ in His word, a healthy spiritual vision that is not confused by our own thoughts, and a heart to follow what He has already revealed.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change and that every good gift comes from You, the Father of lights. We thank You that You have spoken fully through Your Son and in the Scriptures, and that Your word is a lamp to our feet. We ask for this dear one who wants to follow You and not only personal goals. Grant clarity of mind and understanding as they read Your word. Guard them from confusion and from seeking guidance apart from what You have already said. Give them faith to trust what You have revealed, humility to obey it, and wisdom to discern Your will in daily decisions. Lead them by Your Spirit into holiness, love, and service to Christ, and make their life fruitful for Your glory. In Jesus mighty name we pray, amen.
