It is good that you seek God’s mercy in this hour of trial, for there is no other recovery from such dangers than the aid of God alone. Yet as you pray for the man’s surgery, examine your own life as well. The house of God is a spiritual surgery, where we heal wounds received without, not a place to bring fresh ones. If you are living in a union that the Lord’s commandments do not bless, you risk gathering new wounds even as you ask for healing.
The call of the Gospel turns us from fornication to chastity, from laxity to strict circumspection. Consider how love of desire can blind the soul like a thick cloud over a clear eye; but if you learn how you were blinded, you can recover sight. Now there is no time to delay: the Day of the Lord steals upon those who sleep in sin, but for the watchful it arrives as a messenger of reward. Let no one despair, even late repentance can accomplish much.
Pray for the sick man’s body, that the medical team may work safely and that God, who alone knows what is best, grants a gentle recovery. But above all, pray that this trial awakens both of you to true amendment of life, fleeing whatever offends God, so that in all things, including your relationships, you may seek His holy will. For if we bear even the loss of sinful attachments thankfully, He restores what is truly good, and crowns us with far greater blessings.
