Suicide and/or death

Do not lay violent hands upon yourself, for this is not strength but utter defeat. You speak of love for your family, yet the inheritance you would leave them is not silver but sorrow, and a wound that no sum of money can stanch. The devil, that wicked monster who never despairs of our destruction, has whispered this cruel counsel into your ear, clothing it in the guise of provision. But the apostle says plainly, make not provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts. This act would not be care for your household, but the fulfillment of a dark and final lust, despair masquerading as sacrifice.

Consider the blessed David. He too had sins both great and late in life, after he had stored up much spiritual merchandise. Yet he did not cut short his days, but wept before God and found mercy. The mouth of the Lord Himself declared that though our sins be as scarlet, He can make them white as snow. Do you doubt His power to restore? Why then do you make yourself an exception to His lovingkindness? The furnace of affliction is not eternal; you are not too old for His redemption. Your weariness is a sorrow He knows, and your desire to provide for your family is not evil in itself, but this path perverts it.

Approach Him, therefore, entreating, beseeching, asking forgiveness. Do not hide your sins, but tell them in particular, that you may learn the greatness of the benefit. The same Lord who strengthened Paul the persecutor in his sudden conversion, the same who spared Nineveh at the eleventh hour, will not cast you out. Lay down this terrible plan at the foot of the Cross, and trust that He who clothes the lilies can arrange your family’s welfare without your sin. Your life is not your own to discard; it is a trust. Cast yourself upon His mercy, and you shall find, even now, that His strength is made perfect in your weakness.

I hear the deep ache in your words, the exhaustion and the despair that have settled in after being laid off again. You speak of loving your family so much that you would consider ending your life so they could live better financially. That is a powerful but misguided expression of love, born out of a place of hopelessness that sees no other way forward. And I want you to know there is another way, a real way, because God has made a way.

The sense that life has become empty, a shadow you spend in vanity, is exactly what Scripture describes when a person lives entirely on the human plane, governed by the flesh and its constant demands. Solomon, who had every resource and accomplishment imaginable, found that life under the sun left him in despair. Human reason, unaided, runs its course and leads to a dead end. That’s not the final word, though. God offers life in the Son, life that is spiritual, abundant, and overflowing. Not just survival, but a life where your spirit is made alive by union with His Spirit, and meaning and purpose are restored.

Right now, your mind is fixed on the old life: the failures, the weariness, the layoff, the insurance deadline. That old life, with all its sin and brokenness, can truly be put to death at the cross. Not by your own hand, but by faith. When Christ died, He bore your sin and its punishment. When you see yourself crucified with Him, you can reckon that old nature dead. You are not too old, and you are not too tired to receive new life. The very power that raised Jesus from the dead is the power that can quicken your spirit, lift your head, and cause you to walk in a life you could never manufacture on your own.

You have asked for God’s mercy and forgiveness, and His answer is already given. There is no sin He will not cleanse if you turn to Him. He doesn’t forgive partially or hold grudges; He washes completely and forgets. That includes everything you are sorry for. You don’t need to carry guilt or shame any longer. Let Him lift that weight. But do not ask Him for strength to end your life. That is not His will for you. Jesus said, “I have come that they might have life, and that more abundantly.” He didn’t come to give you a way out through death, but a way into real living, where His Spirit indwells you and produces fruit even in the most barren seasons.

Your family does not need a life insurance payout more than they need you, alive and at peace in Christ. The greatest legacy you can leave them is not money but the witness of someone who found hope in the deepest valley and let Jesus transform his despair into praise. That witness will outlast any check. Right now, your flesh is screaming that it’s over, but the Spirit says there is newness of life for those who are in Christ. You have a choice set before you: you can believe the lie that death is the answer, or you can choose life, the true life that is hid with Christ in God.

Stop identifying with the old man who is jobless and broken. That person, in Christ, is dead. You are alive to God, and your life is not defined by a career or a policy expiration date. It is defined by the Son of God who loved you and gave Himself for you. I urge you, do not take a step toward the tree of death. Instead, cry out to the Lord right now: “Who shall deliver me from this body of despair?” Then let the answer rise in your spirit: “I thank God, through Jesus Christ my Lord.” The Spirit of life in Him will set you free. Turn to Him, receive His forgiveness afresh, and live.

We want you to know how deeply we have carried your burden in our hearts these past days. Hearing the weight of your sorrow, your exhaustion, and the love you still hold for your family has moved us to pray without ceasing on your behalf. We have asked the Lord to surround you with His peace that surpasses all understanding, to fill you with the strength that only He can provide, and to remind you of the value and purpose He has placed in your life.

We have prayed specifically that God would reveal His unfailing love to you in tangible ways—that you would feel His presence in the quiet moments, see His provision in unexpected places, and hear His voice speaking hope into your spirit. We’ve asked Him to lift the heaviness from your heart and replace it with the assurance that He is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). We’ve also prayed for your family, that they would feel the depth of your love for them and that God would comfort and guide them through whatever lies ahead.

If the Lord has already answered your prayer in some way—whether through a renewed sense of hope, a door opening, or a peace that has settled over your heart—we would be so grateful to hear how He has moved. Your testimony could be a light to others walking through dark valleys. If, however, the burden still feels too heavy to carry, we want you to know that we are not stepping away. Please share your request again, and we will continue to stand with you in prayer, lifting you up before our Heavenly Father.

Above all, we pray that you would draw near to God, knowing that He draws near to you (James 4:8). May He remind you that your life is precious to Him, that He has plans for you that are good, and that His grace is sufficient for every moment of your struggle. You are not alone, and we will keep praying that His love would overwhelm you, His strength would uphold you, and His hope would anchor your soul.

In Jesus’ Name, we pray.
