Stumble and fall
We hear your cry for divine intervention and protection over your life and household, and we stand with you in fervent prayer, lifting this burden before the throne of God. The psalmist declares, "The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower" (Psalm 18:2). In times of spiritual warfare, we must remember that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12). Yet, we do not fight alone, God Himself is our defender, and He has promised to scatter our enemies.
We rebuke every evil scheme, every wicked plot, and every demonic power arrayed against you and your household in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. The Lord says, "No weapon that is formed against you will prevail; and you will condemn every tongue that accuses you in judgment. This is the heritage of the Lord’s servants, and their righteousness is from Me" (Isaiah 54:17). We declare that every source of evil power targeting you will be exposed, dismantled, and utterly defeated. The Lord will cause your enemies to stumble and fall, just as He promised: "I will send my terror before you, and will confuse all the people to whom you come, and I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you" (Exodus 23:27).
But let us also examine our hearts, for the Lord searches the motives and intentions of all people (Jeremiah 17:10). If there is any unconfessed sin, bitterness, or unforgiveness in your life, we encourage you to repent and seek the Lord’s cleansing. The Bible warns, "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me" (Psalm 66:18). We must walk in holiness and obedience, for the Lord fights for those who trust in Him and walk uprightly.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the Name above all names, the only Name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). We thank You that You are our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). Lord, we lift up [this individual] and their household to You, asking for Your divine protection and intervention. Lord, we also ask that You search [this individual’s] heart and reveal any area that needs repentance or healing. Cleanse them from all unrighteousness and fill them with Your Holy Spirit. Strengthen their faith and trust in You, for You are faithful to deliver Your children. We declare that the gates of hell shall not prevail against them, for they are covered by the blood of Jesus and sealed by Your Spirit (Matthew 16:18, Ephesians 1:13).

At the same time, over the years we’ve noticed that one of the adversary’s subtlest tactics is to keep us so focused on the enemy that we lose sight of our Protector. A wise insight from Narnia’s author reminds us that two errors are equally welcome to dark forces: pretending they don’t exist, and giving them an excessive, fearful attention. So while we take your concern seriously, we also want to gently encourage you not to let the threat loom larger than the God who already holds your life and household.
What might help right now is a simple rhythm: each time fear or anger rises, instead of rehearsing the danger, you can hand it over aloud, something like, “Lord, You see this, and I trust You to handle it.” That shift doesn’t deny the battle; it places it where it belongs. You might also consider letting a trusted pastor or a small prayer group stand with you in this, so you aren’t carrying the burden alone.

Such a cry as this springs readily from the troubled heart, and there are seasons when the saints of God have uttered similar petitions under the pressure of cruel malice. Yet pause and consider with me whether your spirit is fully aligned with the mind of Christ in this matter. You ask that all evil and wicked enemies scatter, stumble, and fall, together with all their source of powers. It is a great thing to be delivered from the hand of the ungodly, and the Lord knows how to overthrow the devices of the crafty; He can break the arm of the oppressor as easily as He dried up the green tree. The horse and his rider He has cast into the sea. We read of Sennacherib and his hosts overthrown, and of Nebuchadnezzar driven from the abodes of men. Yes, the Eternal God withstands everything that opposes itself against Him, thrusting down the mighty from their seats. But take heed that you do not forget the more desperate enemy that lurks within your own breast. It is a far greater mercy to be delivered from the power of darkness within than to see outward foes confounded. Deliverance from the power of sin is as much the work of God as deliverance from its guilt, and where we look for justification, there must we also look for sanctification. You would fancy, from the actions of some professors, that they were not delivered from the power of darkness at all, but were only helped to keep away from some conspicuous sin. But the Lord brings His own out of the very Egypt of their corruption by a high hand and an outstretched arm. Unless a supernatural power is put forth, any form of deliverance from sin is worth nothing. If you have been born again from below, you will go below; you must be born again from above if you are to go above.
Now, it may be that wicked men have risen against you and your household, and you long for God to vindicate His cause. Remember that the Lord’s vengeance upon the enemies of the cross of Christ will be executed in His own time, and it will be terrible indeed when the wind of His wrath shall winnow them. But while you plead for the overthrow of their schemes, be not found secretly trusting in your own innocence. The death warrant is gone out from God against everything that is of the creature. If this evil comes apart from divine permission, where are we? How can a trial be met which is independent of divine rule and outside of the sacred zone of providential government? It is hopeful when we find that all our ills lie within the fence of omnipotent overruling. That which we receive from the rod of the Lord bears the blessed aspect of chastening from a father’s hand, and this is a gladsome fact which makes even the sharpest smart to be profitable. Faith comforts the tried child of God by assuring him of the forgiveness of his sin and his security from punishment.
Turn then from brooding over the malice of men to the contemplation of that great Deliverer who has rescued you from the pit of woe through a ransom. Nobody would have thought of that way of the deliverance of a sinner from the pit of hell through a ransom if God had not thought of it! It is a gift of divine love. If He has delivered us from the tremendous power of sin, He will certainly deliver us from the power of death. He who has delivered us from the powers of darkness will deliver us all the way through. Go to the wells of salvation and drink, and you shall be delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water. Instead of fixating upon the stumbling of your foes, declare the works of the Lord in your own soul. Say with the Psalmist, “I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.” For the Lord has chastened you sorely, yet He has not given you over unto death. Rehearse how you have been brought up out of the horrible pit, and out of the miry clay, and set your feet upon a rock. Knowledge of God is a divine armor, by which we are able to ward off all the blows of the enemy. Know thy God, O Christian, and that will make thee rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.
Let your chief prayer be that God would make you humble, for it is always one great object of the divine dealings to make and keep us humble. That proud spirit which would see all adversaries leveled to the dust may itself need to totter from its towering imaginations. God will cast down the lofty, as surely as He lives, but He will lift up the poor from the dunghill. Search your heart, therefore, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled. May the Lord grant you the same deliverance He gave to Jacob, who crossed the brook full of fear and trembling, yet found his brother Esau falling upon his neck and kissing him. What a surprise of mercy! And what a testimony to the God who can turn the heart of the enemy as He pleases. Let your prayer be examined in the light of the Gospel. You call upon God to make your enemies stumble and fall, to scatter all their power. But consider the Apostle: he did not pray for the downfall of those who stoned and scourged him; instead he was willing to be accursed for their sake, showing a love greater than any man would show his dearest friend. Christ commands nothing impossible, and Paul lived it. Will you seek the destruction of your enemies while the saints chose to love theirs even unto hell?
Recall also that the Enemy of our souls is the one who scatters. How then can you ask the Lord of love to act as the devil does? Christ came to gather those who stray, to turn stumbling blocks into cornerstones. The same Paul who once persecuted the Church was snatched from his madness by a sudden revelation from God. Do you not see that your enemies, if they are unbelievers and workers of evil, might yet be converted? Their stumbling now is a lack of faith, but do not hasten their final fall. Pray instead that they might be granted repentance and the knowledge of the truth.
What of your own soul? Before the good seed is sown, the thorns must be rooted out. Examine your heart. Is there not also a need for your own amendment? Often the very things we suffer come as a remedy for our imperfections. You say you wish to be freed from those who oppose your household, but remember: many labor and gather wealth only to see it pass to their enemies, and all their toil becomes a source of sin. Set your mind on things above, not on earthly vindication.

The cry of your heart reaches the throne of God, and He is not deaf to the plea of those who trust in Him. The Scriptures are filled with the songs and prayers of the faithful who were surrounded by foes, outnumbered and overwhelmed, yet they discovered that the battle belongs to the Lord. When David’s own son rose against him and the wicked closed in like ravenous beasts, he testified that they stumbled and fell. It was not David’s cleverness or strength that saved him; it was the mighty hand of God who knows how to deliver the righteous and to make the path level before them, even in the hour of their flight.
It is true that God is love, but He is also a consuming fire, and it is a terrifying thing to fall into His hands when one stands as His enemy. We do not need to manufacture a vengeful spirit, for Jesus taught us to bless those who curse us and to do good to those who hate us. Yet this does not mean we pretend evil does not exist or that God is indifferent to oppression. He declares, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” Your part is to lift up your soul to Him, to ask that you will not be put to shame, and to trust that His justice is perfect and His timing is flawless. The very plans the wicked lay may become the snare that trips them, and the pit they dig may swallow them whole when the Lord rises to judge.
Do not let the fear of your enemies become an idol in your heart, for the terror of a shaken leaf can paralyze those who take their eyes off the God of heaven. He who remembered Israel in her lowest estate and redeemed her from her oppressors is the same God who gives food to all flesh and whose mercy endures forever. Your household does not stand by human might but by His unfailing covenant. There is a promise woven through the Word that the enemies of His people will not ultimately prosper; their strength will dissolve like a fortress shaken into the mouth of the destroyer. Their doom is sure, whether it comes by a sudden flood or by a quiet disintegration over time.
So bring your fear and your holy cry for justice to the Lord, and then leave it with Him. Offer the sacrifice of joy, not because you have seen the end of your enemies with your own eyes, but because you know Him who has sworn by Himself and will not relent. Sing praises in your household, for your head will be lifted up above the foes who surround you. The God who scatters the proud and makes the wicked stumble upon their own corpses is the same God who upholds all who fall and raises up those who are bowed down. Rest in His character, and let the thought of His coming judgment settle your spirit with a deep and abiding peace, not a frantic desire for personal revenge. He will make an utter end of the trouble; affliction will not need to rise a second time.

He declares, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” Your part is to lift up your soul to Him, to ask that you will not be put to shame, and to trust that His justice is perfect and His timing is flawless. The very plans the wicked lay may become the snare that trips them, and the pit they dig may swallow them whole when the Lord rises to judge.
Do not let the fear of your enemies become an idol in your heart, for the terror of a shaken leaf can paralyze those who take their eyes off the God of heaven. He who remembered Israel in her lowest estate and redeemed her from her oppressors is the same God who gives food to all flesh and whose mercy endures forever. Your household does not stand by human might but by His unfailing covenant. There is a promise woven through the Word that the enemies of His people will not ultimately prosper; their strength will dissolve like a fortress shaken into the mouth of the destroyer. Their doom is sure, whether it comes by a sudden flood or by a quiet disintegration over time.
So bring your fear and your holy cry for justice to the Lord, and then leave it with Him. Offer the sacrifice of joy, not because you have seen the end of your enemies with your own eyes, but because you know Him who has sworn by Himself and will not relent. Sing praises in your household, for your head will be lifted up above the foes who surround you. The God who scatters the proud and makes the wicked stumble upon their own corpses is the same God who upholds all who fall and raises up those who are bowed down. Rest in His character, and let the thought of His coming judgment settle your spirit with a deep and abiding peace, not a frantic desire for personal revenge. He will make an utter end of the trouble; affliction will not need to rise a second time.
