Your weariness and stress are seen by the Lord, and He hears your cry for peace. It is a good and right prayer, because God wants you to live in peace. He has made a way for you to have it.
Scripture speaks of two kinds of peace. First there is peace with God, which comes only through Jesus Christ and His blood shed for our sins. When we put our faith in Him we are no longer at war with God, we are brought from darkness into His kingdom and forgiven. Then there is the peace of God, a quiet rest in the heart day by day. Many who have peace with God have not yet entered into that daily rest and still live strained and tired.
That rest is not found by trying harder or relying on your own strength, skill, or effort. You cannot rest in your works. You can only rest in faith. The Bible says there remains a rest for the people of God, like the Sabbath rest after creation, and that we who have believed do enter into that rest. It is resting in the finished work of Jesus on the cross, trusting that what you cannot do for yourself, He is able to do. God has promised that He will keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him, because that person trusts in Him.
That perfect peace comes when you place your whole case in His hands and keep your eyes on Him rather than on the pressures around you. It is a complete surrender and abandonment to God that becomes a place of rest. The world tries to find rest in philosophy, religion, pleasure, or prosperity, but real rest is only found in Christ, the sure foundation. Without Him the heart is like a troubled sea that cannot rest, but when you turn to Him the war inside is over and He gives a peace that passes all understanding, not as the world gives.
The reason many do not enter that rest is unbelief. We harden our hearts and try to carry the burden ourselves, and then we grow discouraged and lose our peace. God invites you to labor to enter into His rest by choosing to believe Him, to acknowledge His greatness and power and to say from the heart, I will rest on You.
So bring your exhaustion to Him today. Tell Him you are trusting Him with the things that are wearing you out, and ask Him to keep your mind stayed on Him.
I pray for you now. Father, thank You that through Jesus You have made peace with us and You still offer Your peace to us. I ask that You would surround this weary one with Your presence. Lift the weight of stress and give renewed strength. Teach this heart to rest not in striving but in faith in Your finished work. Keep this mind in perfect peace as it is stayed on You. Let Your love and the comfort of Your Spirit abide and bring quietness within. Help this dear one to know that You are working even now and that You will carry what feels too heavy. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
