The cry of your heart has ascended to the throne, and it is not a misplaced cry. But you must look well to the matter of this evil you feel. If it presses upon you as a torment, learn first that it lies within the fence of Omnipotent overruling. No evil can reach you apart from Divine permission, for all our ills are under the government of a wise and tender Father. To imagine some curse or malice operates independently of His scepter is to give the devil more than his due and to rob your God of His glory. He chastens, yes, He chastens sorely at times, but He does not hand the rod to the enemy without His own hand guiding it for your eternal good.
The sharpest deliverance you need is not from a vague oppressive presence, but from the guilt and power of sin itself. Sin is the sour apple that sets the teeth on edge, the darkness that loves to hide, the true evil that would chain you to the pit. And there is a ransom! God Himself has found it, the precious blood of Christ, the Lamb slain, who delivers us from the wrath to come and breaks the dominion of iniquity. If you are in Him, the deliverance is already effectual; the pit cannot hold you, for the time of mercy struck when Jesus rose from the grave. Seek first that inward purification, for deliverance from the power of darkness is as much God’s work as pardon is, and you must look to Him alone for it.
As for your safety and your goods, commit them into that same mighty hand. The Lord brought forth Israel with silver and gold, and none of their stuff was lacking; He who kept the sheep in the wilderness keeps all that belongs to His own. Yet do not fall into the folly of meeting this supposed evil with bitter brooding or a desire for vengeance. Overcome evil with good; let your mind dwell on the countless deliverances already given. Every trial endured with patience becomes a platform for declaring His works. When this cloud lifts, you shall not die but live, and your lips shall be tuned to a song of gratitude.
I plead with you, do not give credence to the whisper that prayer is powerless or that God shuts His ear. That arrow is shot by the Evil One himself, stamped with his cloven foot. The Lord does hear; He will arise. Only see to it that you rest not in the wish to be rid of trouble, but in the Deliverer Himself. We join our faith with yours and ask that the arrows of the Lord’s deliverance would fly, scattering every adversary, until you walk at liberty, holy and unharmed, declaring that He has done all things well. Flee now to Christ, your sanctuary, and let Him be your covering.
