How often the mercy of God steals upon us at the very moment when all earthly prospects seem to fail. You tell me your daughter found no place in the common counseling, and now you wait with trembling upon a narrow portion, five out of every hundred, under the fees waiver counseling. Your purse is light, and your heart is heavy. But this is precisely the singular season whereunto the Lord’s tender mercy has often made appointment to meet His needy children. I would have you look not so much at the smallness of the chance as at the greatness of the God who disposes of every seat according to the counsel of His own will.
False hope would bid you trust in percentages or schemes, but a sound hope in God’s mercy rests upon His character. He is “slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.” His rod of mercy is ever in His hands outstretched; and while you are yet calling upon Him, He may well forestall you, preparing the way for your daughter before the committee even sits. I have often proved that God’s mercy goes before, helping us to such tenderness of heart that we might cease from fretting and begin to trust. If He does give her this place, it shall be altogether gratis, a pure gift; and that will teach you to sing of His wondrous works all the more sweetly.
Yet settle this truth in your soul: whether the answer be yea or nay, the Lord’s mercy is not clean gone forever. He who spared not His own Son but delivered Him up for us all will not leave you to starve in the hour of temporal need. The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s dear Son, cleanses us from all sin and opens the door to every fatherly provision. When the seat is withheld, it may be that a better door is even then swinging wide and God’s mercy is merely exchanging the silver of common favor for the gold of a far more exceeding weight of glory. I pray your daughter shall obtain mercy for that seat, but far more, that she may obtain Christ, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. If He writes her name in the Lamb’s book of life, her education for eternity is secured, whether she study in that college or another.
Take hold upon the promise: “I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy.” The God of mercy will come to you in this wilderness of financial trial, and He will ask home questions that turn your trust from visible means to Himself alone. Then you shall know that He who made the heavens loves you, and that He who bought you with His blood will not suffer Heaven to be incomplete without your good. Let your prayers rise day by day, without fainting, and expect that while you are yet speaking, He will hear. I commend you to the faithful Keeper of Israel, who neither slumbers nor sleeps, and I pray the angel of His presence shall bring you a swift message of peace. Yours in the bonds of the gospel,
