Prayer for ### with depression

Hello, I’m humbly asking for prayer for my son, ### who is a freshman in college and currently struggling with depression. As he navigates this new chapter in his life, he has been feeling lost and hopeless. Please pray that God surrounds him with His love, gives him strength and peace, and reminds him that he is never alone. Please pray for healing, guidance, and hope during this difficult season.

We join you in lifting up your son before the throne of grace and we thank you for bringing his need to us with such love and humility. We understand how heavy your heart must feel watching him navigate this new chapter of college life while struggling with depression, feeling lost and hopeless. We want you to know we are standing with you and with him in prayer, asking God to surround him with His unfailing love and to make His presence known in a very real way.

Scripture reminds us that God is not distant from our suffering. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Isaiah 41:10 says Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. And Philippians 4:6-7 tells us In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. We cling to the promise of Jeremiah 29:11 that For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Your son is not forgotten, he is seen and deeply loved, and even in this season of darkness God has a purpose and a hope for his life.

We also want to gently share something important with you because your request mentioned God but did not mention Jesus. We come to the Father only through His Son, and it is only by the name of Jesus that we have access to God and the assurance of salvation. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 teaches There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. We encourage you and your son to place your trust fully in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for our sins and rose again, for Romans 10:9 says that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. It is through Jesus that we can boldly bring every burden, including depression, to God and find mercy, forgiveness, and eternal hope.

So together we pray, Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, lifting up this dear young man to You. Lord, You know his heart, his loneliness, and the heaviness he feels as a freshman trying to find his way. We ask that You surround him with Your love and let him feel that he is never alone, for You have said in Hebrews 13:5 I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you. Bring healing to his mind and heart, calm his anxious thoughts, and replace hopelessness with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Give him strength for each day, guidance for his decisions, and hope that is anchored in You. Draw him close to Yourself, remind him of his value as one created in Your image, and lead him to godly community, whether a campus ministry or local church, where he can be encouraged and supported. We also pray for his parents, that You would give them wisdom, comfort, and words of life to speak over him. We ask that if this depression deepens, You would guide him to wise and godly counsel and help, and that You would use all means to restore his joy. We pray all of this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to continue to keep the lines of communication open with your son with grace and without pressure, reminding him often of God’s love and of your love for him. Encourage him to stay rooted in the Word, even a few verses each day, to pray honestly to the Lord about what he is feeling, and to seek fellowship with other believers who can walk alongside him. Psalm 42:11 asks Why are you in despair, my soul Why are you disturbed within me Hope in God For I shall still praise him for the saving help of my countenance, and my God. God can use this difficult season to draw him closer and to build resilience and faith. We will continue to keep him in our prayers, trusting that the Lord who began a good work in him will be faithful to complete it and to bring light into this darkness.

Thank you for trusting us with your son's name and this tender season he is in. Starting college is a lot of change at once, and to see him feeling lost and hopeless while you long to help must weigh heavily on you. We want you to know we are standing with you both in prayer.

We hear your heart for him to know he is not alone, to have strength and peace for each day, and to find hope again. Those are good and loving prayers, and we join you in them.

It can help to keep a gentle, regular rhythm of checking in, listening more than trying to fix, and letting him know you are there without pressure to have all the answers. If he is open to it, encouraging him to reach out to a trusted counselor, campus support resource, or medical professional can be an important support alongside prayer, and you don't have to navigate next steps alone either. A pastor, mentor, or counselor for yourself can be a steady place to process what you are carrying as his parent.

Father, we lift this young man to You and ask that You draw near to him with Your love and peace, remind him he is seen and not alone, and guide him and his family with wisdom and hope in the days ahead. In Jesus' name, amen.

We have heard your burden for your ### and we carry it with you to the mercy seat, where our God delights to hear the cries of a parent for a child.

To feel lost and hopeless in a new season is a painful trial, and to watch one you love walk through the valley of depression is to feel the wound in your own heart. Yet we would remind you and him that hopelessness in self need not be hopelessness before God. There is no hope for us in ourselves, but there is hope for us in Him whom God has provided to be the Savior of such as we are. When the soul says there is no hope, the God of Hope answers with a ray of light which He alone can turn from a possible hope into a sure and living hope through believing in Jesus Christ.

Your ### may feel alone, as many do when removed from home and set in a new place among strangers. Our blessed Lord knows that loneliness to its depths. He said, you shall leave me alone and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. He was left alone just when as man He most needed human sympathy, that He might taste the bitterness of forsakenness and so be able to succor those who feel friendless and forlorn. That same Jesus now lives to show that loneliness need not destroy the soul. It pained Him but it did not dismay Him, and He will not suffer His redeemed to be overwhelmed. Even in deep soul conflict, when faith must fight for very existence, His presence remains.

We would have you know that there is healing for the wounded heart. The Scripture says, He healeth the broken in heart and bindeth up their wounds. We very speedily seek a physician for the body, but the Lord is the physician for the soul. The leaves of the tree of life are for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. His fruit is sweet and nourishing, and even His leaves, His gentle words, His tender invitations, His promises, are full of healing virtue. They change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. There is an abundance of healing power in Jesus Christ and His salvation, and He has a peculiar art in dealing with desperate diseases and finds His delight in healing those whom all others have left for lost. What is hopeless in itself is absolutely certain when Jesus puts forth His healing hand. There is nothing which Jesus cannot do.

Therefore we pray with you and for him.

O Lord God of all comfort, look in mercy upon this young man, a freshman removed from home and cast upon a new world. Thou seest his depression, his loss, his heaviness of spirit. Surround him with Thy love which casteth out fear, and let him know that though friends may be few and the way strange, he is never alone, for Thou art with him. Lift the cloud from his mind and give him strength for each day and peace which passeth all understanding to keep his heart and mind through Christ Jesus. Grant him healing, not by our power but by Thine, and speak pardon and healing together as Thou didst of old, for when Thou sayest thy sins are forgiven, healing comes from the pardoning hand. Guide his steps, guard his way, set before him faithful friends and teachers who will speak truth, and turn his eyes to Thy Word where faith cometh by hearing. Give him hope, yet true hope, a good hope of eternal life through believing in Jesus Christ, that being established therein he may not be moved from the hope of his calling. And sustain his parent who watches and prays, that both may learn that while Jehovah lives the mourner need not despair, for there is One who careth for you.

We will continue to bear you both before the Lord, asking that the Sun of Righteousness may rise upon him with healing in His wings, and that joy may yet return. Amen.

God, bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You. Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to know You, the way You want me to know You. So that I will trust You with my life and anyway that You move in my life. Bless me to trust You with all my heart, lean not to my own understanding, acknowledge You in all my ways, and allow You to direct my footsteps and actions. Bless me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all You have called me to do.

God heal me in every area of my life. Deliver and cleanse me of everything in my life that doesn't honor You. Transform and renew my mind. Bless me with love, power, and a sound mind. Let the mind that is in Christ Jesus be in me. Bless me to have and operate with a God-conscious-solution-focused-heart-mind-spirit-and-attitude. Bless me to have a God Kingdom Culture Mentality. God be with me as a mighty warrior. Let no weapon formed against me prosper. Protect me from all the plans of my enemies and the plans of the enemy of my soul. God, all that I have asked of You, in this prayer, please do the same for the writer of the prayer, all those who love and care about me, and all those I love and care about. Thank you for sharing your heart and entrusting your son to prayer in this difficult season. We have lifted him before the Lord and we continue to remember you both with compassion.

The transition to college can feel overwhelming, and feelings of being lost and hopeless are heavy burdens to carry. Please be assured that God sees your son in this place, He hears your prayers for him, and He draws near to those who are weary and brokenhearted. Scripture tells us that God looks to the one who is humble and contrite in spirit and who trembles at His word, and that a contrite and humble heart He will not despise. Our Lord Jesus said, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. This is not because sorrow itself is good, but because God promises His presence, His mercy, and His comfort to those who feel their need of Him.

We pray that God will surround your son with His love in a way that he can truly perceive, that He will guard his heart and mind with His peace, and that He will remind him daily that he is never alone. We ask the Lord to give him strength for each day, to heal what is wounded, to lift the weight of hopelessness, and to lead him step by step with clear guidance and renewed hope. We pray that he will come to know more deeply the love of Christ, who alone is our salvation and our sure hope, and that he will find strength not in himself but in the grace of God at work within him.

We also pray for you as his parent, that God will give you wisdom, peace, and words of encouragement as you support him. Continue to point him to Christ, to His word, and to fellowship with faithful believers. Encourage him to stay connected to a local church, to trusted Christian community on campus, and to seek help from wise counselors and mentors when the burden feels too heavy. God often brings His comfort and guidance through the people He places around us.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior. We lift up this young man to You. You know his struggles, his loneliness, and the heaviness he feels. We ask that You surround him with Your unfailing love, fill him with Your peace that passes all understanding, and give him strength to face each day. Heal his heart, renew his mind, and restore hope within him. Help him to know that You are near, that You have not forsaken him, and that You hold his future in Your hands. Guide his steps, lead him to the people and support he needs, and draw him ever closer to Yourself. Comfort his family as they love and pray for him, and give them confidence in Your faithful care. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who loves us and gave Himself for us. Amen.

We encourage you to keep praying without ceasing and to keep reminding your son of God's promises. If his depression deepens, please help him to reach out for personal support from a pastor, counselor, or trusted medical professional as well. We stand with you in prayer for healing, guidance, and lasting hope in Christ.
