Your workplace has become a battlefield of weariness and conflict, and I hear the ache in your words. It is painful when someone resists resolution and peace seems so far from the situation. Yet in the very heart of this turmoil, God holds out a promise that does not depend on the behavior of another person: He will keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him.
There is a peace that the world cannot manufacture or understand, a peace Jesus Himself left with His followers. But before we can know that steadying peace of God in our daily circumstances, we must first have peace with God. That peace was purchased through the blood of Christ, ending the war between our rebellious hearts and a holy God. If you have received His forgiveness, then the war is truly over. You are no longer running from Him or fighting against Him. That means you can experience a deep, inner calm that is not at the mercy of hospital rooms, difficult patients, or unresolved conflicts.
The key to this peace is simple but requires practice: keep your mind stayed on Him. When your thoughts begin to spiral into what might happen or how unfair the treatment feels, gently turn them back to the One who is your Prince of Peace. He knows your financial needs, your sadness, and the strain of walking into that environment each day. As you focus on His character and His promises, He fills you with a peace that doesn’t make logical sense, a peace that stands guard over your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
You asked for prayer, and that is exactly right. Cry out to Him in your distress, for His ear is open to the righteous and He hears their cry. But here is an important truth: sometimes, after we have prayed, God says to us what He said to Moses at the Red Sea. “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the people to go forward.” There is a holy tension between pouring out our hearts and then rising to stand still and see His salvation. You have done your part to seek resolution. Now, hold your peace and watch Him fight for you. The Lord shall fight for you when you quiet your soul even as you do your job with integrity.
The situation of living with someone who hates peace is an old struggle, echoed by the psalmist: “I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war.” You cannot force peace upon another’s will, but you can refuse to let their spirit rob you of yours. The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable. Sow peace by refusing to return hostility, by praying secretly for this patient, and by entrusting your reputation and finances to God. Seek the welfare of the place where He has placed you, for in its peace you will find your own provision. He has thoughts of peace toward you, plans to give you a future and a hope, not to abandon you in captivity.
Do not mistake an emotional fix for true peace. A fleeting good day can lift your mood, but the fight ends and the feelings fade. Jesus offers to satisfy a much deeper thirst: the spiritual thirst of your soul for God Himself. Come to Him and drink. Let His presence, not changed circumstances, be your constant supply. As you do, you will discover that even in this storm, He is your Wonderful Counselor, your Mighty God. His government of your life is one of increasing peace, and no negative behavior from a patient can halt its advance.
You have not been forgotten. Call upon Him, and He will listen. Pray for His peace to dwell within the walls of your own heart and, as much as it depends on you, within that home. For the sake of your own soul and as a witness before others, say, “Peace be here.” Stand firm, hold your peace, and trust that the Lord your God is with you in this.
