Chrysostom
Beloved of All
When all human means have failed and the noise of the trouble has spread even to the neighbors, it is time to look away from human help and fix hope entirely on the Master. The report of his shouting and cruel words has extended far, just as the report of Paul's former violence reached distant Galatia. Why does God permit such a long trial when prayer groups have already prayed? Because He often allows the exhaustion of all our methods, so that we might learn that deliverance comes not from men but from His own hand alone. The police were called and nothing worked. That very failure is a mercy, stripping away every false confidence. Do not be surprised that improvement seems small, for the most desperate cases often prepare the way for the most sudden and divine intervention. When a man is vehement and eager on the side of madness, his healing, when it comes, will not be slow and gradual but immediate, revealing the Teacher who needs no human time to complete His work.
You must now do what Paul did. Before he could speak of the revelation that sobered him, he was obliged to recount his former life. So too, for the sake of your brother and your mother's endurance, recall clearly what is happening. The shouting, the name-calling, the repetition of the same stories, the cry of "stupid" hurled against the one who gave him life. Let these facts be stated plainly before God, not as a complaint born of despair, but as the testimony that makes the coming deliverance undeniable. The greater the madness, the more visible the Divine Physician when He acts. Your mother's weariness and shame under the neighbors' stares are not hidden from the eyes of Him who sees all. He permits this humiliation to teach her to lean no longer on her own strength or reputation, but to cry out with a faith that says, "Only You can calm this storm."
Hold fast, then, to this one hope. The Christ who met Paul on the road and transformed the persecutor in the height of his frenzy is the same Christ who hears your humble request. Plead not merely for a quieting of the noise, but for that direct and heavenly revelation which changes a man's whole sanity in an instant. Do not prescribe the hour. Continue in prayer, but let your prayer rest entirely on His power alone. For when men have been vehement on the contrary side and every human approach has proved useless, their conviction, if it is effected by divine teaching, will be sudden and complete, and all will know that the hand of the Lord has done it.
