On a brink of divorce

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Hello, please pray for me and my husband. We are ### years in our marriage with a ### year old. He expressed that he does not love me and wants a divorce. Please help me pray for divine intervention. May the enemy not have a hold on my household... on this marriage.

We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting up this marriage that is on the brink of collapse. Father God, we know that You hate divorce, for Your Word says in Malachi 2:16, "For I hate divorce," says Yahweh, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with violence!" says Yahweh of Armies. "Therefore take heed to your spirit, that you don’t deal treacherously." Lord, we ask that You intervene in this situation with Your mighty power. Soften this husband’s heart, Lord, and remind him of the vows he made before You, not just to his wife, but to You. Let him see the sacredness of the covenant he entered into and the destruction that divorce will bring to his family, his children, and his own soul.

We rebuke the enemy’s lies that have taken root in this marriage. The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that we may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). We declare that the enemy has no hold on this household, no foothold in this marriage. We bind every spirit of division, hardness of heart, and unbelief in the name of Jesus. We loose instead the spirit of reconciliation, love, and restoration. Lord, let Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

We also lift up this wife, Lord. Strengthen her in this painful season. Remind her that her worth is not found in her husband’s love but in Your unchanging love for her. Your Word says in Isaiah 54:5, "For your Maker is your husband; Yahweh of Armies is his name. The Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer. He will be called the God of the whole earth." Even if her earthly husband fails her, You never will. Give her the courage to stand firm in faith, to love unconditionally as You have loved her, and to trust in Your perfect timing and plan.

Lord, we ask that You bring godly counsel into their lives, mentors, pastors, or Christian counselors who can speak truth and wisdom into this situation. Your Word says in Proverbs 15:22, "Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established." Surround them with believers who will uphold them in prayer and encourage them to fight for their marriage.

We also must address the reality of sin in this situation. If there has been unfaithfulness, bitterness, unforgiveness, or any other sin that has contributed to this breakdown, we ask that You bring it to light. Your Word says in James 5:16, "Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed." Healing cannot come without repentance and forgiveness. Lord, if there is sin that needs to be confessed and forsaken, reveal it and grant the grace to turn from it.

We pray that this husband would remember the love that once bound them together. Remind him of the good times, the laughter, the dreams they shared, and the child they have raised together. Let him see his wife through Your eyes, Lord, as a gift from You, a helper suitable for him (Genesis 2:18). Soften his heart to the point where he is willing to humble himself, seek forgiveness, and work toward reconciliation.

For this wife, we pray that You would fill her with hope. Your Word says in Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you," says Yahweh, "thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future." Even in this valley, You are working for her good. Give her the strength to forgive, even if her husband does not yet seek it, for her own freedom and peace. Help her to release bitterness and trust that You are her defender and provider.

Lord, we know that marriage is a picture of Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:22-33). When marriages fail, it distorts the testimony of Your love for Your people. We pray that this marriage would be restored not just for their sake, but for Your glory. Let their story become a testimony of Your power to heal, restore, and redeem.

We also want to gently remind this dear sister that her faith must be anchored in Jesus Christ alone. It is only through His name that we have access to the Father (John 14:6). If she has not already, we encourage her to surrender her life fully to Christ, to repent of any sin, and to trust in His finished work on the cross for her salvation. There is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). If she has already done this, we pray that she would draw even closer to Him in this season, finding her strength and identity in Him.

We declare over this marriage that what the enemy intended for evil, God will turn for good (Genesis 50:20). We declare that love will be rekindled, that hearts will be softened, and that this family will be restored. We declare that the fire of their first love will be reignited, stronger than ever before. We declare that the enemy’s plans will be thwarted, and God’s purposes for this marriage will prevail.

Heavenly Father, we ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the name that brings healing, restoration, and breakthrough. We trust in Your faithfulness and Your power to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we can ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). May this marriage not only survive but thrive, becoming a beacon of Your love and grace to all who know them. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

We can only imagine how disorienting and heavy this feels, to hear those words from your husband after so many years together. We’re so sorry. Please know you are not alone in this; we’re praying alongside you, and God sees every detail of your pain and your home right now.

In a moment like this, when one spouse has emotionally withdrawn, it can help to have a wise person who can hold the space for both of you to speak honestly. Would you consider gently inviting your husband to meet with a trusted pastor or a Christian marriage counselor, not to force a resolution, but simply to have a safe conversation with someone neutral? Sometimes a calm, guided setting can uncover what’s really driving those feelings of lost love and give clarity before any final decision is made. Even if he refuses, finding your own confidential support from a wise mentor can steady you as you navigate these next weeks.

We also want to affirm what you already sense: the enemy wants to fracture your home, but he does not have the final word. God is the One who breathes life into dead places and turns hearts in ways we can’t foresee. Hold onto that quiet confidence, even when despair knocks.

Let’s pray together now.

Father, we lift up this marriage to You. You see this wife’s sorrow and her husband’s heart. We ask You to intervene, soften what has grown hard, rekindle love where it’s grown cold, and bring honest conversations in the weeks ahead. Protect their child from lasting wounds, and give them both wisdom to choose the hard, redemptive work of healing rather than separation. We pray for Your peace to guard her mind and for unexpected glimmers of hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The enemy would tear asunder what God hath joined together, but he shall not prevail where faith lifts its cry to heaven. Our Lord Jesus Christ hateth putting away, and you do well to seek divine intervention. When the heart of a husband grows cold, it is a dark and heavy trial; yet the covenant stands, and God Himself is witness to the vows you made. Plead that covenant before the throne. Remember, the Lord saith to His people, “I am married unto you,” and He can speak that same word into your husband’s soul, rekindling the affection that first drew you together. Where there is not this mutual affection it deserves not the name of marriage, but where there is true and genuine love, it is the sweetest and happiest mode of living. That love is not of ourselves; it is the gift of God, and He can grant it anew.

Let your prayer be like that of the Syrophoenician woman: “Lord, help me!” It is such a handy prayer, fit for every hour, holding you up from falling. Christ never finally refuses to listen to such pleading. And while you cry, remember our great High Priest hath already prayed for you, even as He prayed for Peter, that your faith fail not. His intercession is prevalent, prevenient, and full of love. He seeth the enemy’s design to sift you as wheat, but He standeth in the breach. Cling to your faith; in losing that, you lose all.

We, your brethren and sisters, will agonize with you in prayer, as the Apostle besought the church to strive together. This is no time for faint pleading; let us wrestle with God for this marriage. May the God of peace bruise Satan under your feet shortly. And wait upon the Lord with expectancy, for He will speak peace unto His people.

O Lord, revive this marriage; let not the enemy have a hold upon this home. Cause Thy face to shine upon them, and restore the love that has grown cold. Make this union a testimony to Thy faithfulness, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

The sorrow in your words tears at my heart, yet I will not speak smooth things that tickle the ear while the soul perishes. Marriage is a bond ordained of God, a holy mystery that holds forth the very communion of Christ and the Church. When a husband declares he no longer loves his wife and seeks to sever that bond, we must weep, but we must not despair. The enemy of our race hates nothing so much as a chaste and orderly household, for there he sees a living icon of divine love. He comes as a harlot in spirit, whispering that the bond is a chain and that freedom lies in dissolving it. But a harlot is a severing and a dissolving; marriage binds and heals. Do not believe his lie.

I will pray, and the whole church must pray, that God would snatch this man from the snare. Yet you also have a weapon mightier than any word: your own conduct. It is not marriage that hinders godliness, but the purpose which makes an ill use of marriage. Use your marriage now with moderation, with chastity, with an uncomplaining meekness. Adorn yourself not with outward ornaments, but with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. Let your husband see in you no bitterness, no nagging, no coldness, but the unwavering warmth of one who honors the covenant even when it is painful. For there is hope that the lost member may be saved through the marriage; the wife may reclaim the husband because she is made completely his own. If he sees you steadfast in faith, steadfast in virtue, it may please God to pierce his heart.

But hear also a hard word, for love requires truth. If this man should demand that you join him in ungodliness, if he makes your marriage a snare to draw you from Christ, then know that a sister is not under bondage in such cases. Better the marriage be annulled than a breach made in godliness. Yet I speak now of a demand to sin; mere coldness or wandering affection is not that. While he does not compel you to deny the faith, stand firm and pray without ceasing. Invite Christ into your home, not with silver and gold, but by doing good to the least of His brethren for His sake. Let the poor eat at your table, and you feed Him who can soften every heart. The marriage feast of the Lamb is prepared for those who endure; let your household become an outpost of that feast.

Do not say, “He does not love me,” as though love were a vapor that comes and goes. The love of marriage is not a feeling; it is a sacred obligation, a choice of the will blessed by God. Fight for that choice on your knees. May the Lord who turned water into wine at a wedding turn your husband’s heart back to you, that your marriage may be a sweet ointment filling the house, and the enemy find no foothold.

What you are facing is the ache of a covenant under siege, and your cry for divine intervention reaches the ears of the One who designed marriage from the very beginning. When Jesus was questioned about divorce, He did not simply point to the legal allowances Moses gave. He went back to the original pattern, to the heart of the Father: the two become one flesh for a lifetime. That remains God’s beautiful, giving, completing ideal. Yet Jesus also acknowledged that Moses wrote that provision because of the hardness of human hearts. Hardness is that unwillingness to bend, to give, to die to self for the sake of the union. It creates the same intolerable situations today that it did then.

Hear this clearly: God’s divine ideal still stands. He desires this marriage to be healed, restored, and to become a testimony of His power. But also hear this: failing to reach that ideal is not an unpardonable sin. It is a failure to rise to the full intention of God, and His grace covers those who stumble. You are not beyond His mercy, no matter what the enemy whispers.

The real battle for your household is not fought in a courtroom or in the heated words of an argument. It is fought and won in the prayer closet. Before any outward victory can come, the strong man must be bound through prevailing prayer. The One who went to the garden and wrestled in prayer before facing the cross showed us that the decisive conflict is always spiritual. So do not neglect this weapon. Fast, pray, and pour out your heart before the Lord. You can do more after you have prayed, but you cannot do more for this marriage until you have truly prayed.

The enemy will try to convince you that God does not care, that your failures are too many, or that the situation is hopeless. Do not believe him. The same Lord who touched the leper with compassion and said “I am willing, be cleansed” knows your frame. He remembers that you are but dust. He looks upon this mess not with contempt, but with deep compassion, ready to work a divine healing that only He can accomplish.

Yet be careful where you go to find warmth. When Peter was trying to find comfort at the enemy’s fire, he fell into his greatest failure. Do not let a divided heart, the cares of this world, or the deceitfulness of hope in anything other than God’s intervention choke out the word of life. Let the seed of God’s promises be planted deep in your heart. As you open yourself to the Spirit, that seed carries within it the very power to transform you into the likeness of Christ, even in this crucible. Ask the Lord to search your own heart and remove any hardness, any preconceived idea that would shut out what He is trying to teach you. The first and greatest command remains: to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Let that become your center again, regardless of the storm.

I am praying for a divine hold to be placed upon your household, that the enemy’s grip would be broken. May the Lord reveal the riches of His love to your heart this week, and may He do a work that causes you to say, “Look at what the Lord has done.” Keep your eyes on Him. The one who gave the writing of divorce did so because of human stubbornness, but the One who created marriage can resurrect it.

We want to thank you for trusting us with the sacred privilege of standing with you in prayer during this deeply painful season. It has been heavy on our hearts to lift up your marriage before the Lord, asking Him to move in ways only He can. We have prayed for healing where there is brokenness, for love to be rekindled where it has grown cold, and for the enemy to be silenced and bound from any foothold in your home. We have asked the Holy Spirit to soften hearts, restore communication, and breathe new life into the covenant you both made before God.

If the Lord has already begun to work in ways you can see—if there has been even a small shift, a moment of grace, or a glimmer of hope—we would be so encouraged to hear your praise report. Your testimony could be a blessing and a strength to others walking through similar trials.

If, however, the burden still feels just as heavy and the path ahead still seems uncertain, please know that we are not finished praying. We will continue to intercede on your behalf, asking God to intervene in power and mercy. You are not alone in this fight, and we would be honored if you would share this request again so we can persist in standing with you.

May the Lord draw near to you in this time, reminding you of His faithfulness and His deep love for you and your family. May He grant you wisdom, patience, and peace as you wait on Him. We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
