We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting up this marriage that is under such strain. Father God, we know that marriage is a sacred covenant, not to be taken lightly or broken without grave consideration. Your Word tells us in Malachi 2:16, "For I hate divorce," says Yahweh, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with violence!" says Yahweh of Armies. "Therefore take heed to your spirit, that you don’t deal treacherously." Lord, we pray that You would intervene in this situation, softening hearts and restoring what has been broken.
We recognize the pain and confusion in this request, both for the wife, who is fighting to hold onto the marriage, and for the husband, who is struggling with depression and believes the source of his pain lies in this relationship. Depression is a real and heavy burden, Lord, and we ask that You would bring healing to his heart. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, "Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit." We pray that he would turn to You, the Great Physician, for comfort and restoration. Help him to see that true peace and healing come from You alone, not from separation or escape.
We also lift up this wife, who is standing firm in her commitment to this marriage, even in the face of rejection and legal papers. Lord, give her strength and wisdom as she navigates this difficult season. Help her to respond with grace and love, even when it is not reciprocated. We pray that You would provide for her needs, emotionally, spiritually, and practically, as she seeks employment. Philippians 4:19 assures us, "My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." We trust that You will open doors for her and sustain her through this trial.
Father, we must address the reality of divorce and its impact on both individuals and families. Your Word is clear that divorce is not part of Your original design for marriage. In Matthew 19:6, Jesus says, "So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, don’t let man tear apart." We pray that this husband would reconsider his decision and seek reconciliation rather than separation. Lord, if there are unresolved issues or unconfessed sin in his heart, reveal them to him. If there are lies he has believed about himself, his wife, or this marriage, expose them and replace them with Your truth.
We also pray for this wife, that she would not grow weary in doing good. Galatians 6:9 encourages us, "Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up." Lord, help her to continue loving her husband, even when it is difficult, and to trust that You are working behind the scenes. Give her the courage to seek godly counsel and support from her church community, and to lean on You for strength.
Father, we ask that You would break any strongholds of bitterness, resentment, or unforgiveness in both of their hearts. Help them to see each other through Your eyes and to extend grace and mercy, just as You have extended it to us. We pray for a supernatural work of restoration in this marriage, that it would be a testimony to Your power and faithfulness.
Lord, if there are areas where this marriage has strayed from Your design, whether through ungodly communication, selfishness, or neglect, we ask that You would bring conviction and repentance. Help them to rebuild their relationship on the foundation of Your Word, with Christ at the center. We pray that they would seek You together, growing in intimacy with You and with one another.
Finally, we ask that You would prepare this wife’s heart for whatever lies ahead. If reconciliation is not Your will, give her the strength to walk through the pain with faith and dignity. But if it is Your will to restore this marriage, give her the perseverance to keep fighting for it, trusting in Your perfect timing.
We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the One who reconciles us to God and to one another. Amen.
