Your prayer rises like incense, carrying the weight of 1 Timothy 2 before the throne. When you plead for kings and presidents, for senators and pastors, you are stepping into the very heart of God, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. This is no small thing, because the real purpose of those in authority is the preservation of what is good, that we might lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. So when you ask for their salvation, their wisdom, their protection, you are asking for what pleases our Savior.
And wisdom is the central cry here. Not the wisdom of this world, which by its own genius could never know God and has always led to strife and ruin. The wisdom that builds nations and guards leaders is from above. It is pure, peaceable, and sown in peace by those who make peace. This wisdom is personified in Scripture, calling out in the streets, inviting all to come and learn from her. More than that, it is embodied fully in Jesus Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. When you ask for leaders to be guided, you are asking that they would bow to Him, because the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. It starts there, with a hatred of evil and a reverence for the Almighty who reigns.
That longing for peace, for a beautiful land, for quiet lives of devotion, is right. But you cannot manufacture peace by rearranging political alliances alone. Peace is the fruit of wisdom received. The wisdom from God brings a person to peace with God first, because the human heart is naturally at war with Him until we lay down our rebellion. That is why grace and peace are always linked. You cannot know the peace of God until you first experience the grace of God. It is in the discovery of His grace that the restless striving ceases, the assurance of salvation settles the soul, and a deep, abiding peace takes root, a peace that surpasses all understanding and guards the heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
So continue to intercede boldly. Ask for angelic protection and heavenly intelligence for those who guard the innocent. Ask that the channel of every leaderโs heart be turned like water in the hand of the Lord. Pray that evil alignments would be thwarted and the gospel would run freely. As you do, remember that the One who sits in the heavens and does whatever He pleases is working all things after the counsel of His will. He is the source of true wisdom. He has prepared a banquet of it. The call to your own heart, and to every leader you name, is still the same: Wisdom calls. Get wisdom. And with all your getting, get understanding.
