Your request for prayer regarding your medication is heard, but let us consider together what is truly needful. You ask that the company send the right medicine quickly. Yet, hear what the Apostle says: riches and outward comforts are nothing if the soul is sick. The rich man in Hades, surrounded by luxury in life, found no relief because he had no pity, no true wealth of the heart. The poor man Lazarus, lacking everything, was carried to Abraham’s bosom. So, do not let the delay or uncertainty of this bodily relief disturb you excessively. He is not poor who has little, but he who desires much. He is not rich whose shelves are full, but he who needs nothing and trusts in God. If this medicine comes swiftly, give thanks; if it tarries, still give thanks, for your soul may be learning patience, which is a better healing.
Recall the Samaritan woman. She came seeking a common gift of water, but Christ led her to confess her life and then to ask about true worship. So, while you pray for your body’s need, let your greater cry be for the water that springs up to eternal life. Are you not more concerned for the sickness of sin than the ailment of the flesh? Many who are sound in body are dead in soul, and many who are afflicted outwardly are alive unto God. Let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall; and let him in the stave of poverty or pain not despair, for God lifts up the feeble knees. Do not judge by appearance, as if your well-being hinges on a shipment. The Lord made a whole man well on the Sabbath, showing that the heart of the Law is mercy and restoration, not mere external observance.
Examine yourself, then. Is your prayer only for the package to arrive, or is it also for deliverance from the love of the world, which drowns men in destruction? Put no trust in the abundance of things; they profit nothing if you depart this life naked and alone. We will indeed entreat God for the medication, but let us beseech Him more earnestly to extinguish the flame of earthly anxiety and to grant you the perfect health of a soul at peace. The true riches cannot be shipped from any warehouse; they are laid up in heaven, available to all who despise the passing wealth of this age. So pray, receive whatever comes with thanksgiving, and remember that our friend Lazarus slept, and Christ delayed, that the glory of God might be revealed.
