Beloved of All
Your prayer for those in authority is faithful and according to Scripture, and we join with you in it. The apostle exhorts us that petitions and prayers and intercession be made for kings and for all who are in high position, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence, for this is good and pleasing to God our Savior who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
We thank God with you that He has not left the world without governance. Nothing continues to exist if not provided for, and He ordained order from the beginning when He gave humanity dominion and stewardship under Him. Anarchy is an evil and a cause of ruin, and disobedience to rightful authority brings disorder. At the same time rulers themselves need guidance, for their dominion in this present world is brief and will come to nothing unless it is anchored in the wisdom that comes from God and not in the curious wisdom of this age.
So we pray as you have asked, that the Messiah would reign through His Word over the hearts and counsels of those who govern. May presidents and vice presidents, secretaries and legislators, judges and justices, generals and commanders and all who bear responsibility for the nation, be given a love for the law of God, writing it upon their hearts as the king of old was commanded to write a copy of the Law when he took office, and seeking good counsel in the multitude of counselors. May they be granted wisdom to know what to do and what to set as priorities, to carry out fully the good purposes God has assigned to their generation, as David served the purpose of God in his own time.
We ask the Lord to restrain evil and to keep these men and women from the evil one, as Christ prayed that His own would be kept from the evil one, and as it is promised that the Lord is faithful and will guard them. We ask Him to intercept evil plans and to expose falsehood, to protect leaders from imposters and deceivers and from those who have a form of godliness but deny its power, and to grant them discernment to turn away from such. Where there is evil concord, may God bring a good division, separating them from destructive counsel, and where good unity is needed for the defense and welfare of the people, may He grant it. We pray for the protection of all who serve, that He would give His angels charge over them, and for the peace and salvation of the nations, that the gospel would run freely and be glorified.
We acknowledge with you that there are no perfect rulers, and therefore we pray with confidence, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven, and Come, Lord Jesus. Until He comes, we will continue to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, trusting not in our own understanding but in Him, lifting holy hands without wrath and praying continually.
May the Lord grant wisdom, godliness and protection to all in authority, lead them not into temptation but deliver them from evil, and guard our own hearts and minds in the peace of Christ as we bring these requests before the one name given among men by which we must be saved, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
