Let it rain

You ask for blessings to rain down, and well you should, for every good thing descends from the Father of lights. But you have turned the question rightly upon yourself: What can you do for Him? That is the wisdom that escapes so many who petition with words alone while their hands remain idle. The vineyard was planted, hedged, and prepared; the husbandmen had but to keep what was given. Yet they did not. So now, do not think to receive the rain of blessing while the soil of your life lies fallow. You are not a senseless beast, put here merely to consume. You are made in honor, and honor returns honor only by action.

What, then, can you do for Him whose presence is ever profound? Grieve over your sins as if already standing before the judgment seat, for reflection now spares you the punishment then. Let your hands become the dispensers of your own gifts, as alms sanctify the soul and pull down pride. Submit yourself to every lawful authority, for through them God procures your peace. And do not think that because He can do all things, you are free to do nothing. The fear of God appoints you to the ministry of a diligent life. Cleanse yourself, turn over these things in your mind, and then shall the blessings you seek find you not only asking but also bearing fruit worthy of the rain.

You are reaching for something deeper than just a list of requests, and that is a good instinct. The question you have turned over in your heart, what can we do for God, moves from seeking His hand to seeking His face. It is right to ask the Father to pour out His provision on your family and your future. But the surest blessings are not the ones we try to wrest from Him with urgency; they are the ones that flow when our lives are aligned with His unchanging purpose.

I think of a father who once tried to hand a blessing to the wrong son. He wanted to cross what God had already declared, yet in the end he could only bow to the divine will and affirm the blessing on the one God had chosen. The other son begged for a blessing with tears, but he never found the place of repentance, and so the blessing was not granted. What looks like loss in that moment is actually a sobering mercy: God will not entrust His covenant good to a heart that will not turn from its own way. So when you pray for blessings on your daughter and descendants, ask first that they would be found in that place of humble surrender where God’s blessing can rest.

Too often we chase a feeling of blessing instead of taking God at His word. Salvation itself is a gift, not a reward for how we feel, and the same is true of His daily care. Stand on what He has spoken. The promises are solid ground, even when we do not yet see every detail. We know only in part now; one day the full picture will be clear. But what we know is enough: He is good, and He has made Jesus to be sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. That is the fountain from which every lesser blessing flows.

Your question is the right one. What can we do for Him whose presence is profound? Serve Him. Love Him with your life. There is a genuine joy and a weighty honor in doing things for the Lord, things that endure the fire of His testing. Not all our efforts will survive that fire; much done from wrong motives will burn away. But what is done in the Spirit, out of love for Christ, carries into the eternal. And remember, in the eternal there is no past and future, only present. To the great I Am, your faithful works are already a lasting treasure. Do not let that rob you of the gladness of walking in the Spirit now. Offer your days to Him, and you will discover that the deepest blessing is not what you can receive, but the privilege of being poured out for the One who gave Himself for you.
