Thank you for sharing your heart so openly and honestly. The moment you described early in the morning when the urge to drink came and you were able instead to go back to sleep is a real mercy from God. Thank Him for that help. It shows He is hearing you and giving you strength to turn away, and that desire to keep overcoming alcohol is something He wants to grow in you.
God speaks to us as a Father who loves us. When He warns us about things like alcohol, it is not to keep something good from us but because He knows the harm it can bring. Alcohol must be processed by the liver and can overwork it, it works against the nervous system and can harm the mind and body, and it can bring a person under its control. That is why your concern for your wife and your adult son is right and loving. You see that drinking, cigarette smoking and marijuana use can hurt the body and lead to serious illness, and you are right to be worried. The loving thing to pray for is not that God would bless those habits but that He would set them free from them and bring healing to their bodies. Keep praying for them with that hope.
You also asked about the pain in your left shoulder, arm, elbow and hand, and about not wanting surgery or drugs that might cause worse problems. God does care about your pain. The Bible says in Isaiah chapter 53 that He has borne our griefs and carried our sicknesses, and Matthew connects that directly to Jesus healing physical sickness. That means physical healing is part of what Jesus came to bring, whether through His body broken for us which we remember at communion, or through His power today.
Healing can come in different ways. Sometimes God touches a person and they actually feel strength and relief come in a moment. Sometimes healing is gradual, a slow process over time. Even what we call natural healing is still divine, because God created our bodies with the ability to heal and He created the processes that make healing happen. A doctor simply understands and helps those processes that God put in place. We do not always understand why some are healed instantly and others experience a slower healing, or why at times God says no as He did with Paul and his thorn in the flesh after Paul prayed three times. What we can do is bring every need to Jesus in simple trust, not demanding but asking, and trust His wisdom and love to do what is best.
Because of that, do not refuse wise medical help out of fear alone. It is good to be careful about side effects and surgery, and you can talk openly with your doctor about those concerns, but God can work through doctors and through the natural healing He designed just as much as through a sudden touch. Keep asking Him for relief from the pain, and also use the wisdom He has given to others to care for your body.
Your prayers to be a better husband, father and employee, and your prayers for your bosses, coworkers, customers and especially your wife, are pleasing to God. He softens hearts as we pray and as we walk faithfully with Him. The best way to become the man, husband, father and worker you want to be is to keep walking closely with Jesus Christ, who alone saves us, confessing sin, receiving His forgiveness, and letting Him change you day by day. As you stay sober and seek Him, you will have more clarity and strength to love your family well and to do your work with care, including getting your projects and proposals done correctly and on time.
I will pray with you for your adult daughter and her marriage, and if she is pregnant, for a healthy and happy child and for God to strengthen that marriage as a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman as He designed.
Let me pray for you now. Lord Jesus, thank You that You hear this man when he cries out to You and that You helped him turn away from a drink and go back to sleep. Thank You that You bore our sins and our infirmities on the cross. I ask You to give him continued strength to overcome alcohol, to guard his mind and body, and to help him grow as a husband, father and worker who honors You. Please touch his left shoulder, arm, elbow and hand and bring relief from pain, whether by Your instant touch or through the gradual healing You have built into the body, and give him wisdom about medical care. Set his wife and his adult son free from alcohol, cigarettes and marijuana, protect their health and draw them to Yourself. Bless his adult daughter and her marriage, and if she is carrying a child, protect them both. Soften the hearts of his bosses, coworkers, customers and family, and help all who are praying for him. Keep him close to You and help him trust You more each day. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, Amen.
