It is a blessed thing that you turn at once to the Lord in your time of need, and that you do not forget to thank Him for the mercies already received. You are learning that the work of the day is to be done in the day, and that our whole dependence must be upon Him who worketh in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure. The proposal now before you may seem a small affair, yet it is a test of faith and diligence. Go to your task, not with fretful haste, but with a calm trust that the Lord will establish the work of your hands upon you. Remember, I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. This two hours is your portion of the day; use it with all your might, as unto the Lord and not unto men.
The labor you calculate is not only for a coworker; it is a labor in the vineyard of your daily calling, where the Lord has set you. The very pressure you feel is sent to teach you to lean more entirely upon the Spirit’s aid. As the honeycomb drops slowly, so wisdom shall distill upon your mind if you wait prayerfully upon God. Do not think that your estimate is too trivial for His notice; He careth even for the oxen that plow, and He estimates our smallest sincere efforts according to the love we put into them. Only be sure that you do not attempt to rely upon your own understanding alone, but spread your papers before the Lord, and ask Him to guide your mind in the figures.
And when you have done your best, then leave the result with God. The work that is offered in simple faith is accepted, even if it yields no visible success at once. You may die and your numbers be forgotten, but the faithful discharge of duty is never lost. Above all, beware of the temptation to add anxiety to your toil; Christ’s work is finished, and you are complete in Him. What you do is not to earn His favor but to glorify Him as a son working in the Father’s vineyard. Go then, and work with a cheerful heart. The Lord be thy wisdom; and if He spit upon the clay, believe that it is for the opening of blind eyes. The night draws near when no man can work, but for you the day of grace still shines, and the Master saith, Go work today.
