We hear the deep anguish in your heart, and we come before the throne of grace with you, lifting up your marriage, your family, and your soul to the Lord. Your cry for help is not ignored, God sees your struggle, and He is near to the brokenhearted. The thoughts of leaving, divorce, or seeking fulfillment outside of your marriage are not from the Lord, but from a place of pain, exhaustion, or perhaps even spiritual attack. We must rebuke these thoughts in the name of Jesus Christ, for they do not align with God’s design for marriage or His calling on your life.
The Bible is clear about the sanctity of marriage: "Therefore what God has joined together, let no man separate" (Mark 10:9). Marriage is a covenant, not just a contract, and it is meant to reflect Christ’s love for the Church (Ephesians 5:25). The enemy would love to destroy what God has built, but we stand firm on God’s Word and declare that your marriage is worth fighting for. The selfish desires you mentioned, wanting to leave, seeking another relationship, or indulging in sin, are temptations that must be resisted. "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13). You are not alone in this battle, and God provides a way out.
Your wife and children are blessings from the Lord, not burdens. The fact that you have been married for so many years and have raised a family is a testament to God’s faithfulness in your life. The enemy would have you believe that you’ve missed out on something, but the truth is that God’s plans for you are good, and He has given you everything you need to walk in them. "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you," says Yahweh, "thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). The grass is not greener on the other side, it is greener where you water it.
We also want to address the generational pain you referenced, your father’s divorces and the brokenness that followed. That cycle does not have to continue in your family. You have the power, through Christ, to break the chains of the past and create a legacy of faithfulness. "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness" (Lamentations 3:22-23). You can choose today to walk in repentance, to seek God’s strength, and to love your wife as Christ loves the Church.
We must also gently but firmly address the thoughts of seeking another relationship or sexual sin. These desires are not from God, and they will only lead to further destruction. "Flee sexual immorality! ‘Every sin that a man does is outside the body,’ but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body" (1 Corinthians 6:18). The enemy wants to deceive you into believing that sin will bring fulfillment, but it only brings emptiness and shame. Instead, we encourage you to flee from temptation and draw near to God. "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you" (James 4:7-8).
Your desire to be a better husband, father, and employee is a godly one, and we believe God will honor that. Start by confessing your struggles to Him and asking for His strength. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). Then, take practical steps to invest in your marriage. Spend time with your wife, listen to her, and serve her as Christ served the Church. Seek counseling if needed, there is no shame in asking for help. "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up" (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).
We also want to speak life over your children. Your son still living at home may need your guidance and support, not abandonment. Your daughter’s upcoming marriage is a joyous occasion, and your presence and blessing will mean the world to her. Do not let the enemy rob you of these precious moments. "Children are a heritage of Yahweh. The fruit of the womb is his reward" (Psalm 127:3).
Lastly, we must address the fear and uncertainty about the future. It is natural to wonder how many years you have left, but God is not limited by time. He has a purpose for you in every season of life. "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree. He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in Yahweh’s house. They will flourish in our God’s courts. They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green" (Psalm 92:12-14). You are not done yet, God still has work for you to do.
Let us pray for you now:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear brother who is struggling with thoughts of giving up, divorce, and sin. Lord, we ask that You would break the chains of temptation and despair that are weighing on him. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit and remind him of Your unfailing love. Father, we rebuke the lies of the enemy that tell him he is better off alone or that sin will bring him happiness. We declare that Your plans for him are good, and that You have given him a wife and children as blessings, not burdens.
Lord, we ask that You would restore his marriage and help him to love his wife as Christ loves the Church. Give him the strength to resist temptation and the wisdom to seek You first in all things. Father, we pray for healing in his heart, healing from the wounds of his past and the fears about his future. Help him to see himself as You see him: a man of purpose, called to leave a legacy of faith for his children and grandchildren.
We ask that You would draw near to him in this time of struggle and fill him with Your peace. Remind him that he is not alone, and that You are with him always. Give him the courage to take practical steps to invest in his marriage and family, and the humility to seek help when needed.
Lord, we also pray for his wife and children. Comfort them and let them feel Your presence in their lives. Help them to trust in Your plan, even when it feels uncertain.
We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the Author and Perfecter of our faith. Amen.
You are not alone in this battle. God sees your pain, and He is calling you to trust Him. Take one step at a time, and lean on Him for strength. Your marriage and family are worth fighting for, and God will equip you for the journey ahead.
