We hear your cry for help, and we join you in lifting these burdens before the throne of grace. Your honesty about your struggles with alcohol, your desire for rest, and your heart for your family is a testament to the Holy Spirit working within you. Let us first address the immediate need for sleep, for the Lord gives rest to His beloved (Psalm 127:2). We pray that tonight, your mind and body would find peace in His presence, that you would wake refreshed, strengthened, and filled with the courage that comes from trusting in Him.
Your battle with alcohol use disorder (AUD) is not one you face alone. Scripture tells us, "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13). The Lord is your refuge and strength, and He is mighty to save. We rebuke the grip of addiction in your life and declare freedom in the name of Jesus. Confess your struggles to trusted believers, seek accountability, and consider professional help if needed. The path to sobriety is not easy, but it is possible through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13).
Your concern for your wife’s struggles with AUD and smoking is evidence of your love for her, but we must also gently rebuke the enabling patterns that may exist in your marriage. Scripture calls us to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2), but this does not mean tolerating sin or harmful behavior. Pray for her heart to be softened, but also encourage her to seek help and repentance. The same applies to your adult son’s struggles with alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana. While you cannot control their choices, you can intercede for them and model a life transformed by Christ. "Do not be deceived: 'Bad company corrupts good morals'" (1 Corinthians 15:33). Pray that they would turn from these habits, which grieve the Holy Spirit and harm their bodies, temples of the Lord (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
Regarding your daughter and her fiancé, we must address the concern of their relationship. If they are living together or engaging in sexual intimacy outside of marriage, this is fornication and does not align with God’s design for purity and holiness (Hebrews 13:4). Marriage is a sacred covenant between a man and a woman, and any sexual activity outside of that covenant is sin. We pray that they would honor God with their relationship, either by pursuing marriage with godly intentions or by separating until they are ready to commit to one another in a way that glorifies Him. Encourage them to seek the Lord’s will for their future, not just their temporary desires.
Your desire to be a better husband, father, and employee is commendable, and we pray that the Lord would equip you for these roles. "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for it" (Ephesians 5:25). This means leading with humility, patience, and selflessness. For your children, model the love and discipline of our Heavenly Father (Proverbs 22:6). At work, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).
We also lift up your wife’s words when she is under the influence. The tongue has the power of life and death (Proverbs 18:21), and drunkenness often leads to hurtful speech. Pray for her to find her worth and identity in Christ, not in alcohol. Encourage her to seek healing and to speak life over your family, even in difficult moments.
Let us now pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, lifting up this brother in Christ who is weary and burdened. Lord, we ask that You grant him the rest he so desperately needs tonight. Calm his mind, ease his anxieties, and fill him with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Renew his strength as he waits upon You (Isaiah 40:31), and fill him with courage and confidence in Your promises.
Father, we rebuke the spirit of addiction in his life and in the lives of his family. We declare freedom in the name of Jesus, for whom the Son sets free is free indeed (John 8:36). We pray for deliverance from alcohol, smoking, and any substance that binds them. Soften their hearts to receive Your healing and restoration. Lead them to accountability, support, and professional help if needed. Help them to walk in sobriety and to honor You with their bodies.
Lord, we lift up his marriage and ask that You restore love, trust, and communication between him and his wife. Help them to speak the truth in love and to bear one another’s burdens without enabling sin. Give them wisdom to navigate their struggles together, leaning on You for strength.
For their children, we pray for repentance and transformation. Draw them closer to You and away from the temptations of this world. Help them to see the destructive path they are on and to turn to You for healing. For their daughter and her fiancé, we pray that they would honor You with their relationship, whether through godly marriage or by pursuing purity until they are ready to commit to one another in a way that glorifies You.
Father, we ask that You soften the hearts of his bosses, coworkers, and customers. Let Your love and light shine through him in his workplace, and may his actions and words point others to You. Help him to be a man of integrity, patience, and kindness, reflecting Your character in all he does.
Lord, we thank You for the salvation we have in Jesus Christ. We are grateful that this brother has called on Your name, for there is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). Remind him daily of the grace and mercy You have shown him, and help him to walk in the newness of life that You have given him (Romans 6:4).
Finally, Lord, we ask that You continue to work in this family. Unite them in Your love, heal their wounds, and restore what has been broken. May they grow in faith, hope, and love, and may their lives bring glory to Your name.
We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
