Your cry has reached us and we have carried it before the Lord in prayer, and we do pray for you now in this hard and dark time. To feel that you have lost the Holy Spirit and to be pressed down with thoughts of death is a heavy burden indeed, and we do not take your pain lightly. Hear this truth and let it be a comfort to your soul, the Lord still loves you and Christ still receives sinners who come to Him.
You fear that the Holy Spirit has left you. The Scripture teaches that by the Holy Spirit we are sealed, and though we may grieve Him, He does not lightly forsake those whom He has sealed. When the Spirit is grieved by unbelief or unholiness or worldliness, the soul may feel as Samson did when his strength was gone, weak and captive and blind, and assurance departs and doubts arise, and the heart cries, Do I love the Lord or no, am I His or am I not. That darkness of feeling is not proof that He has abandoned you. He is not a mere influence but a Divine Person who dwells with you and shall be in you, and His great work is to glorify Christ and to show you the things of Christ.
Therefore we would turn your eyes away from your own feelings to Christ Himself. The Holy Spirit does not magnify our frames or our outward rites, He magnifies the Savior. He delights to show the love of Christ, how intensely He loves sinners, and to lead a poor lost one to leap into the Savior's arms. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and if you look to Him even with a trembling and broken faith, that very looking is the work of the Spirit in you. Life does not lie within us to stir up by ourselves, until the Holy Spirit visits us we are dead in trespasses and sins, and the fact that you are crying for God's love is itself a sign that He is still striving with you.
You ask how you can pray when you feel so empty. This is what it is to pray in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is willing to help you to pray and to tell you how to pray. When you have no strength and no words, pray in His power and through His help. True prayer may be broken and tearful, yet if it is perfumed with love to Christ and mixed with faith, however small that faith may seem, it is praying in the Holy Spirit. And close after that comes this word, keep yourselves in the love of God. Abide there. Do not measure His love by your changing feelings, but by the cross where Christ died for the ungodly.
And hear what the Holy Spirit says today, for His voice is still, Today if you will hear His voice, harden not your hearts. He says Today. He is urgent because He delights in what is right and good and He longs to see you rid of this heaviness and brought under the power of love. Do not put off seeking Him. Come to Christ today just as you are, confessing your sin and your need, and ask the Father to pour out His Spirit afresh upon you.
We are praying for you that the Lord would grant you to know the Holy Spirit not as a distant it but as a present Comforter, that He would take bitterness out of your sorrow and give you a flood of comfort and hope, that He would restore to you assurance and usefulness and joy, and that He would keep you. May He show you Christ in all His sufficiency, and may you be enabled to live near to Christ and give yourself up to His anointing.
We urge you, do not walk this hard road alone. Tell a faithful pastor or a mature believer near you of these thoughts today, and if the burden to end your life grows heavy, reach at once for help from a trusted person or a counselor or a crisis helpline in your area. Your life is precious to God and to His people.
We now commend you to Him in prayer. O Father of mercies, look upon this wounded soul who feels forsaken and weary of life. For Jesus sake forgive all sin and let the blood of Christ speak peace. O Holy Spirit, Comforter and Spirit of Holiness, come in power, help this poor one to pray, glorify Christ to this heart, and keep this soul in the love of God. O Lord Jesus, reveal Yourself as mighty to save, and grant faith to rest on You alone. Preserve this life, lift up this head, and give light in this darkness, that this dear one may yet rejoice in Your salvation. Amen.
