Husband/money/son

Thank you for sharing your heart so honestly. God sees the pressure you are under and He hears your prayer. The worry over rent and a husband who spends beyond what you have, together with the exhaustion of a child who will not settle at bedtime, is a heavy burden to carry, and the Lord cares about each part of it.

Scripture shows that marriage is meant to be a lifelong covenant where husband and wife belong to one another and are bound together as long as both are living. Within that covenant God has given a simple pattern that brings peace when it is followed and trouble when it is broken. The husband is called to love his wife as Christ loved the church, with a sacrificial, protective love that seeks her good above his own desires. That love includes honoring his wife, recognizing her needs, shielding and providing for her, and not using his place as head to dominate but to serve. The wife is called to respect and support her husband as she would the Lord, offering reverence and willing cooperation. God designed the heart of a man to be strengthened when he is respected, and the heart of a woman to be secured when she knows she is loved supremely and faithfully. When he shows that kind of love, it becomes easier for her to trust and respect him, and when she shows that respect, it becomes easier for him to love her well. When either side fails, the struggles compound.

A husband's handling of money is part of that loving responsibility. All that we have belongs to the Lord and we are managers of it for Him. To spend without restraint and leave the family without provision for basic needs like rent is not loving leadership, and it is not living under the authority of Christ, who is the head of the husband as the husband is the head of the wife. God holds the husband accountable to provide and to live within the means God has given, with self control and honesty about what is possible.

At the same time, Scripture encourages a wife, especially when she is concerned about a husband who is not walking wisely, not to try to force change by constant pressure or argument, which often pushes him further away. Rather, a quiet, respectful, and holy manner of life, coupled with prayer, can speak more powerfully than many words. This does not mean you cannot speak the truth or that you must agree to something that would violate your conscience before God. It does mean that your respectful appeal, offered in love and without withholding kindness, invites God to work on his heart. If your husband is willing to remain with you, you are encouraged not to leave but to remain and let your faithful life be a sanctifying influence in the home, trusting that God can use it for good for you and for your children.

Practically, it will help to seek a calm moment, not in the heat of worry or at bedtime, to talk together about the finances. Bring the facts gently, show what has come in and what must go out for rent and necessities, and ask to make a simple plan together to live within what you have. If possible, invite a wise, godly and trusted counselor to help you both look at the budget and to hold you accountable. Pray together if he is willing, and continue to pray on your own if he is not.

For your son, ask the Lord to bring peace into your home in the evening hours. A consistent, calm bedtime routine, with prayer and Scripture and reassurance of love, can help a child learn to rest. The Lord who sees affliction and hears cries, as He saw and heard in the stories of mothers longing for love and security, sees you and your children now.

Let us pray together. Father, in the name of Jesus, we bring this family before You. You know the need for rent and the fear that comes with not having it. Please provide what is needed and give this husband a clear understanding of stewardship, that he would turn from spending beyond his means and choose to love and provide for his wife and child with responsibility and self control. Soften his heart to hear counsel and to walk under Your authority. Give this wife wisdom, grace, and strength to show respect and love even in this strain, to speak truth with gentleness, and to rest in Your care. Bring peace into this home, calm this child at bedtime, and grant restful sleep. Build this marriage so that love and respect grow together and that Your name is honored in it. We ask for Your mercy and help, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
