Your words carry the weight of a mother's love that feels torn apart, and it is understandable that you feel exhausted, unreal, and lost without your son nearby. The ache of having your heart feel taken from your chest is real, and God sees that grief. He does not dismiss it.
Scripture shows that God understands parental love at its deepest level. The first time the word love appears in the Bible it is not about a mother for a child but about a father for his son, when God said to Abraham, take now your son, your only son whom you love, Isaac. That story was a picture of what God Himself would do, because God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. Jesus is the only begotten Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. There is only one begotten Son, and the Father gave Him for us. When Abraham was told he had not withheld his only son, it was the voice of the Lord speaking, foreshadowing the Father's own heart in giving Jesus. God knows what it means to love a son and to release him, and He is not distant from your sorrow.
Because God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, you who have trusted in Christ have received adoption as sons and daughters. You are not just a servant or an outsider. God has adopted you into His family and has sent the Spirit of His Son into your heart, crying Abba, Father. That means in this season when you feel alone and hours away from your boy, you have a Father who is near, who hears you call to Him as a child to a father, and who holds you when you feel you cannot stand.
Every mother wants what is best for her son, like the mother who came to Jesus with her two sons asking for their future. Your desire for your son to finish what you started together, to be grounded and to walk wisely as he is figuring out who he is, reflects the good instruction Scripture commends. The wisdom given to Solomon begins again and again with my son, hear the instruction of your father and do not forsake the law of your mother. Those words remind us that both a father and a mother leave a mark on a child. The years you have poured into him, teaching and loving him in your home, are not erased by distance. At the same time Scripture is honest that a mother and a father can each be a powerful influence for good or for harm, so prayer for his influences, his teachers, and his choices where he is now matters greatly.
Jesus also taught that our deepest identity is found in doing the will of the Father. When His own mother and brothers sought Him, He asked who is my mother and who are my brothers, and pointed to those who do the will of His Father in heaven. His earthly family, including the sons of Mary and Joseph, did not yet understand Him. That does not diminish the honor God commands us to give to father and mother, but it reminds us that your son is ultimately in God's hands and must learn to walk with God for himself. God often works in the fullness of time, not always on our timetable, and He is able to keep and guide your son even when you cannot reach him as you would like.
You asked how you can be okay until you know what the future holds. Bring your son to Jesus as the desperate mother did who came for her daughter who was tormented. She would not leave, she would not stop asking, and her faith triumphed because she came to Jesus and stayed until she received His answer. You can do the same. Bring your son by name to Jesus every day. Ask the Lord to guard his heart and mind, to give him wisdom, to draw him to Himself, and to heal your own heart as well. Jesus heals both spiritually and physically, and He can bring healing to a broken heart that feels it cannot go on.
The Lord corrects and cares for every child He receives, as a father the son in whom he delights. That care extends to you and to your son. You do not have to carry this alone or try to force an outcome. Continue to love your son faithfully, keep the door of communication open with grace when you can, speak truth with gentleness, and rest in the Father who has adopted you. Pray that your son will seek the Lord above all else, that he will honor both his father and his mother, and that God's will would be done in his schooling and his future.
May the Lord give you peace that passes understanding, strength for each day, and comfort in knowing that your Father hears you when you cry Abba, Father. May He keep your son in His hand, lead him in the way of promise and not merely of the flesh, and bring healing to your home in His perfect time and way.
