Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing this burden and for faithfully praying for your friend. That compassion itself is from the Lord, and it is beautiful that even in a short friendship you have felt moved to intercede for their healing and for them to come to know Jesus who gives true life and hope.
I join you in prayer for both things, for healing and for salvation, because God cares about the whole person. Scripture shows there is a real connection between the health of the soul and the health of the body and mind. What goes on in our inner life, our attitudes and thoughts, even affects our physical well being. In a personal letter to his dear friend Gaius, the apostle John expressed a warm wish that he would prosper and be in good health just as his soul was prospering. That was not presented as a blanket promise that everyone will always be healthy, but it does show the heart of God and the heart we can have for one another, to desire and to pray that those we love would know wholeness in body, mind and spirit as their soul prospers in the Lord.
Your friendship matters more than you may realize. The Bible says a friend loves at all times and that pleasant, kind words are sweet to the soul and bring health. Conversation between friends is like a sweet perfume that rejoices the heart, and as iron sharpens iron, honest and caring dialogue helps sharpen and strengthen one another. Part of loving a friend well is also being willing to speak truth gently, even when it hurts a little, because a true friend wounds only to heal, like a surgeon who cuts only to restore. In the same way, the Word of God can cut deeply, but never to destroy, always to heal. And above every human friend, there is one who sticks closer than a brother, Jesus Christ himself. He is the friend who never leaves, and He is able to meet your friend in their mental health struggles with comfort, strength and peace.
When Jesus walked on earth He showed His power to heal. He touched the leper, He healed the servant of the centurion, He lifted Peter's mother in law from fever, and crowds came with many sick and oppressed and He healed them. Matthew connects this to what Isaiah prophesied, that He bore our infirmities and carried our sicknesses. He also showed authority over spiritual powers, and even the evil spirits recognized who He was. Yet recognizing Him is not enough. Salvation comes when a person personally trusts Him as Savior and bows to Him as Lord. His very name means the Lord is salvation, and to confess Him as Lord now brings eternal life.
That is why your prayer for your friend to know Jesus is the most important prayer of all. The grace of God that brings salvation has appeared, and Scripture urges us that now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation. We are not to put off responding to Him, for our eternal destiny rests on receiving what He offers. When someone does turn to Him, God Himself begins to work within them, giving both the desire and the ability to do what pleases Him, and they learn to work out that salvation with reverence, not in order to earn it, but because God is at work in their heart.
So let us pray together. Father, we thank You for Your grace that offers salvation through Jesus alone. We lift up this dear friend who is struggling in their mind and emotions. You see their pain, You know their thoughts, and You care about their health. We ask that You would bring healing, peace and stability, and that You would use pleasant words, supportive friendship, and needed help to strengthen them. Most of all, we ask that You would draw them to Yourself, that they would see Jesus as Savior and Lord, receive forgiveness and new life, and know the hope that only He can give. Work in their heart to will and to do Your good pleasure, and help my fellow believer to continue as a faithful, loving, truth speaking friend who reflects Your love. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our salvation and our healer. Amen.
Please keep praying and keep showing that steady friendship. Continue to speak gracious, hopeful words, to listen well, and to gently point to Jesus and His Word. God is able to use your prayers and your care as part of His work in your friend's life.
