Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your cry to God for the health and safety of your loved one is understandably fervent, yet pause and consider: are you as anxious for her soul as for her body? You beg that no problem befall her, but what is the true problem that should most alarm us? Not the sickness of the flesh, but the sickness of sin. The body is pampered and guarded, yet what does luxury avail? Nothing so tears apart and corrupts as intemperance and soft living. If you desire her well, pray first that she be kept from the diseases of the soul, pride, greed, love of ease, for a healthy body with a diseased soul is like a golden vessel filled with poison.
Ask rather that she fear God, and then there is nothing dreadful that can harm her. The one who trusts in the Lord stands on a rock unshaken; all present dangers are but shadows. The martyrs rejoiced in their chains, counting it joy to suffer for Christ. True safety is not the absence of trouble but the presence of a right spirit. If she walks in holiness and good works, she is secure even amid perils; if she neglect these, no amount of bodily health can shield her from eternal ruin.
Remember that wealth of health is uncertain, like all earthly things. It can vanish in an hour. But hope in God is infinitely more valuable. Do not make an idol of the body, feeding it with overcare while starving the soul. God cares for both, but He desires that we seek first His kingdom and righteousness. The saints were few but precious; one such soul is worth more than ten thousand who are spiritually sick. Pray then that your loved one be numbered among that select multitude, whose treasure is in heaven, not on earth. Only then will she be truly healthy and safe, come what may.
