God, why so much pain?

Your cry comes from a heart that is weary and pressed down, and God hears that cry even when the answer seems delayed. The pain you feel is real, and it is not a sign that God has forgotten you or that your life was given in vain.

Scripture shows us that suffering is not meaningless and it is not always a punishment. Even the Son learned obedience through what He suffered, and having been made perfect through suffering He became the source of salvation for those who trust Him. In the same way, suffering can be a training for us. It teaches us to obey, to be patient, to rely not on ourselves but on God. There is nothing so strong as a soul that has learned long suffering. Like a spark that falls into the deep sea and is quenched without harming the sea, troubles fall upon such a soul and pass away without destroying it.

You ask why you must ask for everything and still not receive what you need. God has made us so that we must ask, not because He is unwilling to give, but because He desires us to draw near to Him. Prayer is a great weapon. If we make God favorable to us by prayer early in the morning and again at night, we go out into the battles and storms of each day with security. Faith itself lives by asking and seeking, not by restless questioning that tries to figure out every reason. Faith rests and trusts that God, who is more trustworthy than any man, will give what is truly good. What He withholds or delays, He withholds for a greater mercy, because He wills that all should be saved and come to knowledge of the truth, and He often gives what we need for eternity rather than what we think we need for the moment.

Do not think that your pain means God is giving you nothing. He gave you life itself, and He gave His mercy even to the worst of sinners so that no one might despair. Paul called himself the chief of sinners and yet said he obtained mercy so that Christ might show His great patience as an example to all who would believe. If God was patient with him, He is patient with you. He is long suffering, not because He overlooks sin, but because He is drawing us to repentance. His long suffering is meant to save, not to crush.

You may feel pressed on every side and perplexed, but the promise is that we can be pressed and yet not crushed, perplexed and yet not driven to despair, pursued and yet not forsaken. This is not by our own power but by the grace and power of God at work in our mortal flesh. The enemy never despairs of our destruction, so we should never despair of our salvation. When we turn back to God with earnest love, He does not reproach us for the past or for the long time we were absent. He remembers our former sins no more.

So continue to pray, even when you are tired of asking. Bring your pain plainly before Him each morning and each night. Tell Him you do not understand, and ask Him to make you steadfast. Ask not only for relief from pain, but for the strength to bear it well and for the faith to see His hand in it. He who gave you life will sustain that life, and He will not leave you without what you truly need for this day and for eternity.

May the Lord show you His mercy, quiet your heart with His presence, and teach you through this trial to rest more fully on Christ alone, who suffered for you and lives for you.
