extrenely discouraged

The weight you are carrying is very real and it is understandable that you feel discouraged and lost right now. Facing a court decision that adds an inflated amount to what you truly owe, being responsible for a debt that does not reflect the truth, without work and with failing health, and then finding that reaching out for help from the city only made the burden heavier, would leave anyone feeling overwhelmed and unable to keep going.

That sense of hopelessness is something Scripture speaks to honestly. When a person lives under constant pressure and sees no way out, despair quickly follows. There is a way of looking at life that says reality itself is hopeless, and that view always leads to loneliness and deeper despair. The truth is that no one can live without hope. You were not made to live in despair, and God does not leave you there.

There is a point many of us reach that the apostle Paul described when he cried, O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me. At first we try to answer that question by asking how we can deliver ourselves. We try harder, we look for another appeal, another document, another way to prove the truth. When that fails we come to the end of our own strength. That place of total inability is painful, but it is often the very place where God can show that deliverance does not come from our own effort. He allows us to come to the end of ourselves so that when victory comes we know it is His work and we can give Him the glory. The victory is not by our striving but through Jesus Christ and the work of His Spirit within us.

I also hear your concern about your health. The apostle John once wrote a warm greeting to a dear friend, saying he wished that he would prosper and be in good health even as his soul prospered. That was not a guarantee that every faithful person will always be healthy or financially prosperous, it was a loving prayer from one friend to another. It does remind us that there is a real connection between the health of the soul and the health of the body, and that our attitudes and inner peace can affect us physically. At the same time, many of the most faithful and devoted followers of Jesus walk through serious health problems, and that does not mean they lack faith or commitment. We cannot equate physical health with spiritual standing. Your spiritual health before God is of far greater value than even your physical health, and God sees and cares about your body even as He tends first to your soul. His ways are not our ways, and there are times we cannot understand why He allows certain hardships to remain.

The matter of money and debt is a sensitive and heavy burden. Scripture is very aware of financial pressure and of what it feels like to be poor and under strain. Jesus taught about a servant who owed a debt so large he could never repay it, and his master forgave him freely out of compassion. That picture is meant to remind us that God in Christ has forgiven the far greater debt of our sin, a debt we could never pay. Because He has forgiven so much, we can trust Him with the debts and injustices we face now. He sees when an amount is inflated and untrue, He loves truth, and there is great joy when His children continue to walk in truth even when the truth seems slow to be recognized by others.

When the outlook feels impossible, the invitation is to look up. The psalmist knew this kind of discouragement well. He was filled with anxiety and despair, pursued and overwhelmed, and he talked to his own soul about it. Yet he learned to turn his heart and mind toward God, and that turning became the cure for discouragement. He would say to himself, hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him, who is the health of my countenance and my God. Even while still in the trial he chose to hope that he would again praise God, even for the trial that now weighs him down. That same turning to God in prayer and praise can lift the heart when everything around you feels dark.

You have asked in Jesus name and feel lost because the answer has not yet come as you hoped. Please do not hear that as a sign that God has not heard you. Keep bringing the truth before Him, keep walking in truth before others, keep careful records of what is true about the rent and seek wise and honest counsel where you can. Above all, keep your hope in God Himself rather than in the outcome of the process alone. He is the one who delivers when we cannot deliver ourselves, He is the one who sustains the soul and cares for the body, and He is the one who will be your help and the health of your countenance.

I am praying for you, that God will bring the truth to light in His timing, that He will provide for your daily needs and open a door for work as you are able, that He will strengthen your health and more than that prosper your soul as you walk close to Jesus, and that He will replace this deep discouragement with His peace and hope.
