A love letter can arrive in an envelope with a black border, and it is still a love letter. The appointment you dread, the travel that worries your heart, these things look somber on the outside, but within the fold is your Father's own handwriting, and it reads, "I am with you."
I want you to picture a hen gathering her chicks under her wings. That is the picture the Holy Ghost gave us, and it is meant to be taken personally. The hen does not merely shield her brood from a hawk overhead, she also lets them feel the warmth of her own breast, the steady beat of her own heart. So our Lord does for His own. When you and your son set out tomorrow, you are not traveling into an uncertain distance. You are traveling into the shadow of the Almighty, and under those feathers you shall trust. He who holds the waters in the hollow of His hand will hold your son's health and your hopes in that same grip.
The specialist's room may feel like deep water, but the ship that carries Christ in it cannot sink. The great Physician has already been there ahead of you. He knows the name of every cell and fiber in your boy's frame, for He knit them together. And though you cannot see the outcome, you can see the Pilot. That is enough. We are not called to peer into tomorrow, God has hidden the future from us so that we might lean upon Him for the day's portion, fresh from the mint of His providence. Today has manna enough. Tomorrow will have its own, and it will taste just as sweet.
I know a father's heart runs ahead of his feet. I know you wish you could carry this burden instead of him. But you are doing something far greater than carrying it, you are laying it upon the shoulders of One who is faithful. Christ is not merely able to keep your son safe on the road; He is able to keep your soul steady while you wait. The same love that ran to meet the returning prodigal, that fell upon his neck and kissed him much, is moving toward you now. It is not an icy eye that watches you. It is a Father's tender gaze, and He saw your prayer the moment it left your heart and began to run.
So rest in this: whether the report be favorable or bring new trials, you are in fellowship with the Son of God, and that fellowship is your true safety. He has called you into communion with Christ, and because He is faithful, He will keep you even to the end. Your son is under those feathers too, covered, companioned, loved. Go with a calm face then, patiently awaiting your Father's will, whether the port be nearer than you thought or further than you hoped. In either case, you sail in the same vessel with Jesus, and the harbor is sure.

Lord Jesus, we do not know how to navigate what lies ahead, but we know the One who calmed the sea with a word is riding with us. Spread Your wings over this dear parent's heart. Quiet the anxious flutter. Go before their son into that office; sit beside him in the car; let the peace that passes understanding mount guard over their minds. We ask for favorable results, because we are not ashamed to ask for what our hearts long after. But more than that, we ask for the grace to trust You whatever the answer looks like, knowing that You do all things well. Into Your pierced hands we commit this journey and this child. Amen.
