Disappointment can settle very deep in the soul and leave you feeling cast down and disquieted within. The Scriptures speak directly to that condition. One psalmist was in that same place and he began to speak to his own soul, asking why it was so depressed and discouraged, and then he gave the answer to himself, hope in God.
Hope as the Bible speaks of it is not just wishful thinking. It has two parts together, a desire for what God has promised and an expectation that He will do it. That kind of hope is what sustains you when everything around you seems to be failing. It keeps you going when you cannot see a way forward. Without God there is no real lasting hope, but when you have Him, hope is extended and enlarged.
Part of how God builds that hope in you is through His Word. The psalmist prayed, remember the word to your servant upon which you have caused me to hope, and he found that the Word was not only his hope but his comfort. Many times comfort comes simply by opening the Scriptures and being reminded of who God is, His faithfulness and compassion. Through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures we are given hope. The God of hope can fill you with joy and peace as you trust Him, so that you abound in hope.
You have reason for such hope because it is a living hope, confirmed by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and a blessed hope, the promise of eternal life with Him and the expectation of His appearing. God who cannot lie has promised eternal life to those who trust in His Son, and His promises do not fail. That hope purifies and steadies us and gives us an eternal perspective when present sufferings feel heavy.
In the midst of great discouragement the prophet Jeremiah reached a turning point when he said, this I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. He had been looking at his dark circumstances with no light and no way out, feeling even that God had turned against him. But when he lifted his eyes to the Lord and remembered that the Lord is merciful and faithful, that His compassions do not fail, hope returned. He concluded, the Lord is my portion, therefore I will hope in Him. It is good to hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord. The battle is not yours but His, and He is able to work on your behalf.
So in this disappointed place, try to gently turn your attention from your circumstances and set it again upon the Lord Himself. You may weep over your circumstances, but you can still rejoice in the Lord for who He is and what He has promised. Talk to your soul as the psalmist did and tell it to hope in God. Recall His Word, remember His past faithfulness, and wait patiently for Him to act. He loves you and has redeemed you through Jesus so that you might be His and live with Him forever.
I am praying for you, that the God of all hope will fill you with His joy and peace as you trust Him, that you will find comfort in His Word, and that your desire and expectation will rest firmly in Him. May He lift you out of discouragement and sustain you day by day as you quietly wait for His help and look forward to that living and blessed hope He has given you in Christ.
