Depression

Thank you for sharing so honestly about the heaviness you are feeling. It takes humility to say you are experiencing depression and you are not even sure why, and to ask for prayer. I am praying for you.

What you describe is something many of God's people have known. Depression often grows out of hopelessness, that sense that there is no way out and nothing you can do. One prophet described it as being in the depths, at the very bottom, hedged in and trapped with only darkness around him. He remembered his affliction and misery and said his strength and hope had perished. Perhaps you feel something like that now, looking at where you live or at other circumstances and wondering if that is the cause, feeling weary and without answers.

There is a turning point in that same prophet's lament. Out of that pit he made a deliberate choice about what he would bring to mind. He recalled to his mind the character of the Lord, and his outlook changed. He remembered that it is because of the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, that His compassions never fail, that He is faithful. Things may be hard, but His mercy is still sustaining you moment by moment. That is true for you as well.

This shows something important. We can think ourselves into deeper despair by keeping our minds fixed on ourselves, our conditions, and our surroundings. Or we can find hope again by setting our minds on the Lord and renewing our thoughts in Him. The secret in times of discouragement and depression is to get our eyes off ourselves and our circumstances and onto the Lord. That does not mean denying that circumstances are painful. You may weep over where you live or other burdens, but the Bible calls us to rejoice in the Lord Himself, not in our situation. He is greater than any problem we face and He is in control. Nothing comes to pass apart from Him, and His Word remains true.

You can also learn to speak to your own soul as the psalmist did when he was cast down and disquieted within. He asked himself why he was so discouraged and then told himself to hope in God. You do not have to keep talking yourself further into defeat by rehearsing how bad things are. By God's help you can talk yourself toward hope by reminding yourself of who God is and what He has promised.

Even the apostle Paul knew this kind of heaviness. He spoke of being cast down in Macedonia with outward struggles and inward fears, yet he found that God is the One who comforts those who are cast down. He is the God of all comfort, and He draws near to strengthen and help in times of fear and uncertainty.

So I pray that God will lift this weight from you and give you His comfort and hope. I pray He will help you to recall His mercies each morning, to see His compassion and faithfulness even in a hard place, and to keep your eyes on Him rather than wallowing in self pity or turmoil. Ask Him to renew your mind through His Word and to remind you that He is with you and will give you strength for today. If this heaviness continues, please reach out to a trusted pastor or mature believer who can walk with you, pray with you regularly, and encourage you in the Scriptures.

You are not alone, and you are not without hope, because the Lord remains faithful and compassionate toward you. May He fill your heart with hope as you put your trust in Him.
