Unbearable depression and anxiety

Thank you for sharing this so honestly. To carry unbearable anxiety and depression for so long, even while you have trusted Christ since you were young, is a heavy and wearying burden, and it is understandable that you feel unsure how to pray.

Not knowing what to say in prayer does not mean God does not hear you. Prayer is not about finding perfect words. It is a great weapon given to us for each day, in the morning and at night, to go to our Father simply and honestly. Even a short cry like, Lord, have mercy on me, help me today, or Father, I am overwhelmed and I need you, is heard. When we do not know how to pray, the Spirit intercedes for us, and God receives the groaning of our hearts.

Please do not think that needing medication means you have failed in faith. If it helps you to function, thank God for that help and continue to use it wisely with those who care for you. At the same time, do not give up hope for your soul. One of the greatest dangers is not the struggle itself but falling into despair, as if God has abandoned you or your salvation is lost because you still suffer. The enemy never despairs of our destruction, so we should not despair of our salvation. To sin wounds us, but to despair keeps us from the remedy. Your depression does not mean Christ has left you. He remains faithful, and He is a Father who does not fail to supply what His children need, even when we feel empty.

You asked how to pray for this to go away. Bring that very request to God plainly. Ask Him for relief, for peace, for strength to get through each day, and for wisdom for those helping you. Also ask Him to keep you alert and near to Him, even in small ways, reading a psalm, whispering a prayer when anxiety rises, giving thanks for one small mercy. It is also good not to carry this alone. We are told to exhort one another and to comfort the feeble minded and support the weak, with patience. That means we need the prayers of others, and others need ours. Even the apostles asked for the church to pray earnestly for them. Let trusted believers in your church know how you are doing so they can pray with you and walk with you. If your anxiety and depression feel unbearable, please also keep talking with a pastor, counselor, or medical provider you trust and let them know the depth of what you are feeling.

I will pray for you now. Father, I thank You that this dear one is Yours in Christ and that You hear every prayer. You see the weight of anxiety and depression that makes daily life so difficult. Have mercy and grant relief, peace, and strength to endure. Help when words fail, and let Your presence be near morning and evening. Keep this heart from despair and remind it daily of Your steadfast love and the hope we have in Jesus. Surround this life with faithful people who will encourage, comfort, and pray without ceasing. In Jesus name, Amen.

You are not forgotten. Keep bringing your honest heart to God each day, even with few words, and keep letting others help bear this burden with you.
