Unbearable depression and anxiety

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I have been saved since I was ### and I'm ###. Ive still been suffering from unbearable anxiety and depression that makes my life really difficult. I really don't know what or how to pray for the depression and anxiety to go away. I take medication that helps me function but that's all it does.

We hear your heart and we grieve with you in this long season of unbearable depression and anxiety, and we thank you for sharing so honestly with us. We want you to know that even as a believer who has been saved for many years, it is possible to love the Lord deeply and still walk through deep darkness, and this does not mean you have failed or that God has abandoned you. We have all experienced seasons where our souls feel heavy and troubled, and the Word reminds us that Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit Psalm 34:18.

We also rejoice that you have shared that you are saved, and we want to gently remind us all that it is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we are saved and have access to the Father. There is no other name by which we can be saved and no other way to come to God except through Him. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. And it is written that whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved Romans 10:13. We cling to the truth that when we call on Jesus, we are heard, forgiven, and held secure, and we are so thankful that you belong to Him. If you have put your trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior who died for your sins and rose again, you are His, and nothing can separate you from His love Romans 8:38-39.

Your struggle to know what or how to pray is something we understand, and scripture speaks directly to this. We are told in nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7. We are also told to cast all our worries on him, because he cares for you 1 Peter 5:7. When words fail, we take comfort that the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings which cannot be uttered Romans 8:26, so even sighs and tears are prayers God hears. You do not need perfect words, only a willing heart to come honestly before Him.

We do not rebuke you for taking medication that helps you function. God in His mercy gives wisdom to physicians and we are thankful for anything that helps you carry on, though we understand your longing for more than just functioning. We encourage you to continue to walk with wise medical care and also to seek consistent fellowship and godly counsel, whether from a pastor or a trusted Christian counselor, because we were not meant to carry such heavy burdens alone. We remember the invitation of Jesus, Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls Matthew 11:28-29. And we hold to His promise, Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you Romans 8:38-39. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness Isaiah 41:10.

We lift you up together before the throne of grace now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You on behalf of our dear brother or sister who is weary and heavy laden with depression and anxiety. We thank You that this one is Yours and that You see every sleepless night, every anxious thought, and every heavy day. We ask You to pour out Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard heart and mind in Christ Jesus. We ask You to lift the weight of despair and to remind this precious soul that You are near to the brokenhearted. Lord, teach us how to pray when we do not have words, and let Your Holy Spirit intercede for us. Bring rest where there is restlessness, hope where there is hopelessness, and strength for each day. Help us to cast every care on You because You care for us, and help us to daily renew our minds in Your Word, to walk in fellowship with other believers, and to keep looking to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. We ask for Your healing touch, whether through gradual restoration, through Your Word, through community, or through Your miraculous power, according to Your perfect will. Let Your grace be sufficient and Your power be made perfect in weakness 2 Corinthians 12:9. We pray this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to keep coming to Him simply and honestly each day, even with short prayers like Lord help me, Lord have mercy, or Father I cast this anxiety on You. Meditate on small portions of scripture, speak them aloud, and let other believers walk with you and pray with you. We are praying that God will lift this heavy burden in His timing and will use even this painful season to draw you closer to His heart, for we know that why are you in despair, my soul Why are you disturbed within me Hope in God For I shall still praise him Psalm 42:11. We are standing with you and trusting that He who began a good work in you will complete it.

Father, humbly ask for Your healing power. Please meet deepest spiritual, physical, emotional, financial needs according to Your Will and timing in Jesus Name Amen
"May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace." Numbers 6:24-26

We are so grateful you shared this honestly with us. To have walked with Jesus since you were young and still face unbearable anxiety and depression can feel confusing and exhausting, and not knowing how to pray about it only adds to the weight. Thank you for letting us in.

It makes sense that you would feel stuck when medication helps you function but does not lift the heaviness. We are glad you have that support to help you function, and we encourage you to stay in close touch with the doctor who prescribes for you about how you are doing day to day. Alongside prayer, it can also help to have a counselor or pastor you trust to talk with regularly, someone who knows you and can walk with you over time.

You do not need perfect words for God to hear you. When anxiety and depression make prayer feel hard, a simple, honest prayer is enough, even something like, Jesus, I am overwhelmed today, please be near to me and help me take the next step. He knows what you cannot put into words.

Father, we lift our friend to You right now. You see how long they have loved You and how heavy these days feel. Please draw near with Your peace and presence, give wisdom to those caring for them, and guide them to the right help and support. Give them rest, strength for today, and hope for tomorrow. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

Dear God,

I pray that depression lifts off and that you can put some worship music on to lift the spirit of heaviness in Jesus name

I pray that joy returns and you can see goodness of God in Jesus' name

Lord teach them to notice things that bring joy and spring in the step in Jesus' name

Put them in spaces where they can change their perspective of life in Jesus' name

Heal past hurts and restore their mind so they can enjoy life in Jesus' name

Thank You Lord for continuing to restore this one in Jesus' name

Praying for you - Please know you are not alone in your struggle - I am with you in the suffering of both unbearable anxiety and depression - it has made life more than difficult. Praying in the name of Jesus.

Your sorrow has been laid before the Lord and before His people, and we have not heard it lightly. To be saved for many years and yet to walk under so heavy a cloud of depression and anxiety is a trial that many of the best of God's children have known, and it does not mark you as forgotten or faithless.

You say you scarcely know what or how to pray that this burden might be lifted, and that the help afforded you allows you but to function. Let me tell you plainly that anxiety in itself has never comforted any soul, nor ever brought grist to the mill. I have found by my own experience and by watching others that the very anxiety which comes from being in a difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty. To tell yourself about it over and over does no good, but to tell the Lord about it and to agonize before Him in prayer is right and profitable.

Do not restrain prayer before God because words fail you. Real prayer is not sacred masquerading or a mere form repeated when the heart has no liberty. It is the inwrought cry of the soul, in the warp and woof of your being. When you have no liberty, still pray. When you have no fine language, still pray. The simplest form of prayer is often the most prevailing.

You ask how you shall pray. Pray as Jacob prayed, in humility of spirit, not pleading your own worth but the Lord's mercy. Pray argumentatively, as one who pleads a promise. Take His own Word and spread it before Him and say with David, Remember the Word unto Thy servant. That is not to inform a forgetful God, for He cannot forget, but it is to remind Him as a child reminds a father of his promise, asking Him to fulfill it. And pray that other prayer which well becomes every heavy heart, Quicken me in Thy way. That prayer is itself an index of life, for only those in whom the Spirit already dwells can so cry to be quickened. Quicken me in private prayer, in public worship, in reading the Scriptures, in all the ways of devotion where your soul feels so dull and burdened.

You have done wisely to use the means which Providence has placed in your hands, even as Jacob used wise means and then betook himself to prayer. To use the physician's help is not unbelief. Add to that means the force of importunate prayer. Knock, and it shall be opened unto you. If the door seems to block the way, knock until it is opened. Continue much in prayer even when you do not get a blessing in it at once. Mighty prayer will yet prevail if it has but time. Forsake not the closet, neither in the daytime nor at night, for the Lord will still hear.

Know also that you are not left to pray alone. Intercessory prayer is the sweetest prayer God ever hears, for the prayer of Christ Himself is of this character, and He ever lives to make intercession. Prayer is a wondrous blender of hearts. We will plead for you and with you. We will pray you out of your troubles and not desert you, and if that prayer should be long before it gets an answer, we will persevere in importunity.

Let us pray for you now.

O Lord God, remember Thy Word unto Thy servant, upon which Thou hast caused him to hope. Thou hast not forgotten, though he feels forgotten. Quicken him in Thy way, for his soul cleaves to the dust and his heart is sore vexed within him. Give him not merely to function, but to live and to feel Thy quickening power. Keep him from evil, keep him near Thyself, and let him hear Thy still small voice above the noise of his fears. Help him to cast his burden upon Thee, who carest for him, and to find that Thy grace is sufficient. Through Jesus Christ our only Saviour and Advocate, Amen.

We will continue to bear you up before the throne. Seek the Lord still, tell Him all, plead His promises, and wait upon Him who has promised never to leave nor forsake His own.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

God, please forever honor this prayer over each of our lives. God Thank You. Amen, so be it by faith, and by faith, it is so.
